Lot of 25 empty propane tanks

Hey all

There's a post on CraigsList in the Austin, TX area for 25 older propane tanks for sale for projects. $50 for the whole lot, but I imagine they aren't going to ship them so it appears you'd have to be local.

Anyone local who is making smelting pots from these should snap them up.

Or take them to homedepot where they have the automated swap cabinet and swap them out for new tanks and make several hundred dollars pretty quick.

yeah alot of places like HEB, and Wal-Mart that have cages and employees who are barely trained will take them as trade in's towards filled tanks too.

The ones with a "machine" will. Automated equipment they have cannot tell if the knob has 5 flutes or 3. Also does not check for cert. I fill my own, at my house, from my 500 gal tank, until
the cert is out then I trade them in for a "fresh one".

I have a 500 gallon tank for my house/pool, there is a capped fitting to one side of the center on the top that is connected to a tube that runs down into the liquid.

Remove the the cap and install a valve with hose and fitting for small (20 lb) tank. I generally bleed through the hose before opening the small tank valve.

On the small tank valve there is a small relief that accepts a flat head screw driver, back that out and open the valves until liquid begins to come out then shut off valves and tighten the little screw.

For the real small disposable tanks I had to make a special Schrader valve tool to fill them.

You can't get liquid from the new (3 flute) 20lb tanks but can get liquid from the old (5 flute) tanks, just turn them upside down.

They changed how the valve works to save people from themselves, the new style shut off if you invert them.

A friend on this forum was good enough to send me a pot and a support ring from a Freon tank. The support ring was from something else. In the last two weeks I have turned 400 pounds of range scrap into almost 300 pounds of bigots. I use a 24 count mini muffin pan. Makes 12 oz. ingots and I get two pan fulls per batch. Works well.

Here is the one I made. I also put a shroud around the pot for efficiency and I still need to fill a few of the open holes around the top, but it will easily melt down 200+ pounds of ingots from range lead. I copied the bottom pour idea from my RCBS Pro Melt Furnace.
