....one of my Grail Guns that I failed to buy when prices were reasonable...but will get one day...

No, the load doesn't sound unreasonable even deep seated...

The "woods" load I carry in the 4" Tracker is an Accurate Molds 41-215V with 8.0 grains of Unique in a .41 Special case. Didn't list it above because I have not run it over the chrono yet...my guess would be around 1100 fps... Meplat is .37 and cuts a big round hole in everything. Have tested the bullet out to 100 yards in a scoped 57 and the groups are good and the holes still perfectly round...

How is the difference in recoil between the two guns... I have looked at the CA but don't like the skinny grips....

    Thanks Bob,

Recoil of the Taurus is noticeably softer to me vs the the Charter (ports and grips?). If I hadn't read your conversation with Taurus, I probably would have shot the little gun to pieces with full .41 Mag loads.

Pachmayr makes replacement grips for the Charter Arms.

    U R welcome...

The Compact may work...I have them on a couple of 3" J-frame .357s and even with full loads it works... The Gripper is too narrow for me...thanks...

..not sure if you have had a reply or not, but word is Mr. Clements is winding down and will no longer be doing GP-100 conversions...they have been removed from his website.

Working up 2 loads for my 4" Tracker using 41 Special brass

#1 The 215 grain SWCHP from GT with 13.5 grains of 2400 & a Remington 2 1/2 cap. This gave me 1012 fps with an ES of only 15 fps. I prefer the 2400 loading over the 8.0 grains of Unique as the recoil with 2400 is just a smooth push compared to the sharp upward snap of Unique.

#2 The 240 grain WFN-GC From Montana Bullet Works. Just starting on this projectile, thinking of using 2400 again, but have Unique, WW 296, 4227 on hand. Any suggestions on starting - maximum loads??

41...I would rule out 296 only because it should only be used for top end loads which will over time degrade the Tracker...it is H110 in a different can...

I have zero experience with 4227.

The 13.5 grains of 2400 or 8.0 grains of Unique is where I would start...

I am using 13.5 of 2400 in my 41special, bullet is hp version of NOE 41-23? LFN. Very accurate and I think I clocked one at 1150 out of the 6 inch GP100. Just a quick shot over a guy’s chronograph at the range one day. Shot it in my 4 inch TI Tracker as well, never really shot any groups there.

Rjm52. , thanks for confirming what I had seen, hopefully it is just due to the Ruger 44specials. I want to get him to go over my bearcat.(not 41

So with that 240 grainer you would start at 13.5 grains of 2400?

What would you expect for Velocity out of my 4" barrel?

Looking forwards to more tests with the Charter.
One thing I ran upon right away was that the larger sizing diameter loads for the Blackhawk are too tight in the Pug.

A 215 can be run with 17.0 grains of 2400...all you are using is 13.5 and getting 1000 fps...no reason you can't run the 240 with the same charge...

You "may" get just slightly higher velocity than the 215 from more pressure. When I ran a 210 cast with 8.0 grains of Unique I got 950...a 230 Keith went 1000...

Here are some chrono results from the Charter 2.5” (haven'et chroned the Taurus yet). Labradar results at the muzzle and 55 deg f (45 deg f for the last two). Bob posted a link earlier in this thread.

    180gr Barnes ….… 1,195 fps (21 es)
    230gr HSM …….… 1,145 fps (28 es)
    230gr Underwood .. 1,263 fps (18 es)
    250gr Grizzly …….. 1,169 fps (4 es)
    210gr Fed Swift A Frame .. 1,191 fps (1 es)
    210gr Grizzly Punch …….. 1,239 fps (20 es)

Grizzly Punch is a bit too long to function reliably in either. Pulled three of the factory bullets. The factory rounds were loaded with 22.0gr of powder that looks exactly like H110/W296.

Resized two cases and loaded one with 20.5gr of the factory powder (w/factory primer) and one with 20.5gr H110 (w/CCI350) and reseated the bullets to an OAL of 1.581”.

Loaded the third bullet in a starline .41 special case primed with CCI350 and 18.0gr of the Grizzly factory powder from the original cartridge. Crimped in the bullets crimp grove it’s OAL was 1.528”.

Chronographed the following today in the 2.5” Tauras Ti Tracker. LabRadar 35 deg F.

150gr Underwood Leghigh Xtr Defender …. 1,342 fps
    210gr Punch – 41 Special 18.0gr H110 …. 1,149 fps
    210gr Punch – Reseated 1.581” Factory … 1,115 fps (no discernable diff between powders – (ES - 20 fps)
250gr WFNGC Grizzly Cartridge factory …. 1,159 fps
215gr SWCBB HiTec, 6.8gr Univ Deep Seated and crimped over front dr band …. 839 fps.

Well, I contacted SAAMI today. Left my number on a voicemail and got a call back from a very nice man. He gently educated me to the reality that an ammunition co must be involved in a new caliber. Reference ammo has to be made available on a continuing basis and certified proof loads provided and 16 ammo companies must all maintain test equipment to test it. etc. etc. etc. There is no way to promote a new caliber without ammo co involvement. Meanwhile Revolvers are old tech and plastic pistols can be manufactured for a fraction of the cost. Ruger is in the best position of any U.S. co to make use of the .41spl and they really aren't interested in partnering with an ammo co to make it happen. Mr Taffin or Brian Pearce or some other famous person might get them to do something, but that is probably not going to happen. I thought if it was just a few thousand dollars to do the testing and some test ammo it might be doable. I am very disappointed. Anyway now I know the real story...........

...not real surprising Dixie...but there is still hope...

G-C...Those are a lot of fun... You know what kind of powder you are going to use yet? I have one of the MP molds that throws a 190 gr. HBWC and 210 gr. wadcutter... I can tell you that the old standby, 8.0 grains of Unique, is TOO much... No pressure signs but I think the velocity was in the 1300s...

16 ammo companies must maintain test equipment for specific cartridge?

I have never been personally involved but have friends that are. Unless laws and rules have changed a huge amount, you were given some bad info.

Does seem a little "odd" when you think about some of the cartridges out there that are only made by a couple of manufactures...
    .45 AR
    .45 GAP
    .22 Jet
    .327 Federal

Just doesn't sound right to me either....

Bob, you are up close to there. Why don't you go by there and try to talk to someone?

By the way all the calibers you listed were launched by Ammo companies............
