Show & Tell yer 19th century single shots ~ replicas or real deal ...

    Please share, what'cha got?

A pair of Italian .45-70 replicas.

Cimarron Chiappa '74 Creedmoor Team USA Sharps on top, dst, 11lbs 9ozs, 34" round barrel (to save weight).
Pedersoli John Bodine Remington '74 Creedmoor rolling block underneath, dst, 12lbs 14ozs, 34" heavy octagon barrel (to increase weight).
Lee Shaver soule vernier tangs, Lyman spirit level globes, Kick Killer butt pads.
(dst - double set triggers - were illegal at the Creedmoor match, but this ain't 1874 and so I'll take 'em! )

Attachment 135585New to me 1873 Springfield. All original and correct, except the sling, just something I had laying around. Haven't even got to shoot it yet.

This was my finest pair of 19th century singleshots. It was made in about 1830 by Joseph Lang.

Here's an old post of mine from the ASSRA Forum a few years back. I built this rifle back around 1982.

The sporterized trapdoor thread inspired me to dig this rifle out of the gun safe and take a few pictures. About 30 years ago I bought an original unused 1870 trapdoor action, complete with original cartridge hammer to build a rifle. I wanted as authentic a Gemmer as possible, using exact repro furniture, etc. Rich Hoch made the barrel to my specs, chambered it for .50-70 Govt., and installed it on the action. Navy Arms 1864 Springfield repro lock accepted the original hammer and was fitted to the action after I hand fitted a fly into the tumbler so the set triggers would work. L&R triggers and guard, and iron Hawken patchbox and buttplate, underrib and thimbles. H&R officers model tang sight, Mowrey full buckhorn rear, and german silver blade up front. Premium ++ curley maple for the stock, stained with nitric acid/iron filings over heat, hand rubbed oil finish, many coats. I did all the stock work and metal finishing myself. As I recall, I spent soomething like 18 months on the project. I'd work along till I got stuck on a problem, and walk away from it for weeks to months till a solution came to me, then I'd get back at it till I hit another impasse. Eventually, the gun was finished, and I believe turned out quite well.

    Here are some pictures:

John, that's a great project. Have you tried it on deer or whatever? Nice, nice rifle.

Beware those guys from Holidaysburg. They got me started on single shot rifles. Some old guy named Rufus Morningstar (aka Bernie) let me shoot his Sharps replica when I was visiting there and it's been all downhill ever since. Very nice, beautiful gun you have there John.

John ... very nice job on the Gemmer. it has been a fantasy of mine for years but I still have no bucks to begin. yours is an inspiration and I may just have to give it a try with my 1884 setup trapdoor.

NICE rifle! looks like, perhaps, an original Ballard sight staff as well. Is the front sight original? I can't quite tell from the photo.

What Model (4?) and caliber is it?

The sight was original. The story behind the sight sucks but I got the gun for quite a bit cheaper. I won the gun on an online auction. When the gun arrived the sight eyecup and height adjuster was missing. I called the auction house and spoke to the owner. They noticed it missing and gave me the story of that it was never there. I told them to look at the pics, they then owned up to the fact that they think it was stolen at the inspection day before the auction. So after a refund I got the ballard for $600.00.
