    3" Fiocchi 12G Hull Interchangeability

I have found little data on the 12G Fiocchi 3" hulls that come primed, new. Especially for the 800-X I have pounds of, and since I can't find any Blue Dot, HS-7, or Longshot locally. I have seen several loads say you can use Cheddite, Fiocchi, or Federal 3" hulls for the same recipe. I have found plenty of data for Federal 3" hull reloading.

Is it safe to interchange load data for Fiocchi 3" and Federal Gold Medal 3" hulls, and possibly Cheddite 3" hulls? Similar to how I hear from many people that interchange their recipes for Win AA and Rem STS?

A good place to go to for those kinds of questions is

    http://www.ballisticproducts.com/

Click on load of the week icon and you can get alot of info and also email for answers. As far as Fiochi vs Cheddite vs Federal straight wall cases, something else that makes a difference is the base wad material composition. Be safe.

A Roll crimp device spins. MEC loaders do not incorporate any spinning device for the purpose of creating a roll crimp on a shotshell.

I seen the one they have, but since it melts the hull, you can't use it again, hulls are hard to come by up here and I'd like to reuse them, so I'll stick with the fold.

    Thanks everyone!

You can reuse roll crimped hulls again. I do it all the time for slugs. I have the Ballistic Products roll crimper, and the little aluminum shell vise for roll crimping. I also made a cone bit for the drill press. It softens the fired hull and opens it up, and flairs it. Any restriction left is minor, and can be tolerated. Ballistic Products sells this type of tool also. I bought a bag of 100 of the Fiocchi primed 3" hulls for like $12, from Ballistic Products. They are on sale often. At that price, you can load them once, and throw them away, if you must, and not even worry about additional reloadings.

I am trying to decide if the extra wadding allowed in the 3" hull, will give better performance than the 2 3/4" hull with slugs or RB. I tend to like the RB projectiles better in my NEF Slug Hunter.

GBertolet,in my experience the answer to your question is no. Generally, more components mean more chances for misalignment and inconsistent compression. Pretty to compare specific loads though, just load 5 of one 5 of the other with appropriate charges and let the target (and your shoulder) tell you.

msta999: try slowing down a bit on the RPMs . It will be a little easier on the hulls. Also those Russian hand roll crimping tools that have been being sold on Ebay do a real nice job of finishing up a crimp. I use the drill press until just about done and finish up by hand. They seem to be a little better about not bottoming out on the nose of the slug and finish up nice and tight. Gp

I have the BPI delux roll crimper, I have never melted a hull... I do use cheddite and fiochi data interchangably, never thought of doing so with Federal though, I'll not do so as the load data I have for cheddite and fiochi do not appear to be anywhere close to federal, but then I haven't looked closely.

I’ve used Federal 3” hull data for 3” Fiocchi and Cheddite hulls for years.

That really helps! Did you have to adjust the powder at all?

    K,
    Fed. 209A 03513 1251 (EV 14) 10,860 (EV 600)

    FIO-616 1234 (EV 28) 9,690 (EV 1600)

Looking at these specs, I should be able to use a FIO-616 in place of Fed 209A and though the velocity/pressure will be less, it should be a safe load, with the same powder, wadd/slug combo....? sound right?

This is what I ended up with, how do I fix it? I try'd a cork spacer, but it didn't hold up.....

Are these ok to shoot? I assume it will just blow out the tip of the hull when the slug comes out....

I loaded 32 gr Universal Clays powder with the 1 1/8oz DGS

Yeah, while 616’s are hot primers, they aren’t 209A hot.

Cork won’t work. You too soft. You need to raise your slug column by:

    1. Adding a nitro or overshot card over the powder.

    2. Add nitro or overshot card on top of slug.

I’ve done both but I prefer the 2nd method. Adding a NC card on top of slug helps the overall crimp.

The frangible clear plastic overshots are the ticket for me.

I use clear over shot cards for roll crimps. I was always afraid they will break during the fold crimp process.

    So they don’t break?

For fold crimps I have been punching out white plastic milk jug for overshot cards, especially for buckshot with filler. No leaks and made the perfect height for factory like crimps.

That being said I have not roll crimped many and I think only a few with the white plastic overshot cards.
