    45-70 Versus 225# Boar

    And the winner is....... 45-70.
I bought a 1895GBl about a year ago with the mission of making my own cast boolits and NEVER using a factory load....
Thanks to everyones help here i accomplished a great load. 405 gr RCBS 45-405-FN, cast from wheel weights and range scrap with a BHN of 11-12 range. Powder coated zombie green and fitted with a shiny copper gas check. beautiful bullet.. i sat it on top of 18gr of Blue Dot for a mild 1200 fps load. shot great and is a MOA gun all day long.

I carried it with me alot of deer season and never had a chance to whack anything with it.
Last night i Took the wife on her 1st real hog hunt. she told me about 5 months ago that she wanted to try hunting, after 20 years of marriage. Every Mans dream come true.
Due to the close proximity of the feeder to our stand (12-14 yards) i swapped guns with her and let her have the 45-70. well she effortlessly guided a 405 grain Green Cruise missile right into His Right ear..... Instant dirt nap. 1st Kill with that bullet, that rifle, and her 1st kill ever... to say i am a proud man is an understatement..
Thanks everyone for all of the wisdom you have bestowed on me.
    Ron

    Oh HAIL yeah!

Got all spring and summer to get her ready for deer season too!
Got a .22 .30 .32 .357 .38 .40 .41 .44 .45 .480 or .500 S&W cylinder that needs throats honed? 9mm, 10mm/40S&W, 45 ACP pistol barrel that won't "plunk" your handloads? 480 Ruger or 475 Linebaugh cylinder that needs the "step" reamed to 6° 30min chamfer? If I were running a .45-70, that is exactly how I would do it, Blue Dot at around 1200 to 1300 fps. You should be happy for, and proud of your wife. Love the green copper checked bullet. Great post.

That is totally awesome! (notice that is a big notch above just awesome). Very nice trophy in my book. Some great shooting and very nice load and nice looking boolit also. I will have to try your recipe. Congratulations to you both for a job beyond just well done.

WOW that is great and I am sure you are both proud. I get my wife in the woods a couple times a year and it is great too. Congrats to you both.

Along with the above posts, I offer congratulations, on the hunt and your new hunting partner...albeit after 20 years.
For your range conditions and your partner, your load was perfect... mild and effective.

One problem you over looked though.... Likely as not, your sweet 45-70 has been quietly "claimed"...
You have a couple of choices... either buy yourself another one, or start looking for another one to cover an anniversary or Christmas present.

    Nice hunt and great hog.

Yep my wife shot her first deer with my 35 rem. and she refers to it as her gun.

Thanks for the congrats everyone. several of my friends said the same thing about her confiscating the rifle. She doesn't have a favorite yet and hasn't claimed any of mine yet... the kids have either their own guns or a favorite in my collection that they call dibs on.
My 7 year old has her own rifle, but like her brothers 243 cause it is a known killer. My 12 year loves them all but his 3 favorite is his 243, my 308 BAR with VX-3L, and the 45-70...my oldest boy prefers my 35 rem and my 300 WSM.. My personal favorite is that 35 Rem, damn thing don't miss... I really hope i don't LOSE my 45-70 but she's the boss. We will see.

Hard to tell from the picture, but is her grin bigger than the pig's head, or just close?

    "308 BAR with VX-3L"

Now you really speaking my language. Better hide that one.

I enjoy watching my wife shoot deer and turkey more than shooting them myself.

    BIGRED,

Is there public land pig hunting in FL or is it a paid ranch hunt type of situation. My stepson moved to middle, west FL last fall and I am wanting to try a pig hunt with him. What are license requirements etc.

Wonderful. You are truly blessed. Anything joyfully shared with the wife is a good thing, but a .45-70----------------Can't imagine any better.

She shot it, she gets to skin it and dress it out.

    Just kidding. Very good post.
