    Dutch Beaumont Vitali

I picked up this rifle the other day and am gearing up to load it. Looking at using either the Lee 457-340 or 457-405. I'm leaning towards the 340 because it could double for a heavy 45 Colt mold. planning on forming brass from 50-90 using 8mm Lebel to form the shoulder and 45 Colt on the neck.

The rear sight is different than other Beaumont's I've seen. The sight flips up for ranges over 600 yards, under that it slides up a ramp and is clamped in place with a knurled nut.

That was the way I loaded mine until I finally broke down and had CH make me a set of dies. Money well spent if you intend to shoot much.

Were the CH dies $165? Hard to justify since I got the rifle for less, then again I've seen these rifles sell for more than $300. I just don't want to be upside down.

Were you forming brass from 50-90 using the CH dies?

Thanks to a care package from TreeKiller I got some cartridges loaded and was able to test fire. I used Hogdons trapdoor 45-70 load data for H4895 and a 385gr. boolit. Plan on working up loads for Lee 340 and 405 boolits.

Strange, a friend just e-mailed me pics of one he saw in a local antique store. Said he couldn't identify it.

I tightened it down and it's now flush. Took considerable effort.

I use 45/70. I put a short piece of brass tubing over the case to center it in the chamber when I fire-form it.

That a good idea never thought of that. Is the rim about the same size too.

It's a little smaller, but close enough to work.

FWIW: The tubing I use is a standard size that you'll find in the hardware store or hobby shop. As someone had given me the 45/70 brass, I spent less than $2.00 to make up about 100 cases. I just neck size so I didn't even need to buy dies. It ended up being the cheapest setup for any round I've ever reloaded.
