    280 Remington Anyone?

We were at the new Cabelas in Spokane during thanksgiving and I bought some brass.

Well I just realized I bought 280 Rem, when I was looking at 284 Winchester for my K-31. I didn't realize till tonite that after all the looking I ultimately grabbed the wrong bag out of the bin..

Brand new bag of 50. I never read anyone here posting about this caliber which looks like it may be a pretty good cast boolit shooter. Kinda like a low pressure 270 Win?

Maybe I should hold on to em' and buy the rifle...

Why "low pressure .270"? Oh- maybe you mean for cast. The differences
between the .270 and .280 are essentially zero, except maybe a wider range
of bullet weights are possible when handloading the .280. I mean if 0.007"
difference in bullet diameter makes any difference that a shooter or shootee
can detect, I would seriously doubt it.

Oh well, that's all I don't need... a new rifle, new dies, molds, brass, checks.. ah forgetaboughtit..

Three years ago, I had never heard of a .280 Remington. Then I buy one. Now every where I go it's 280 this, 280 that.
I haven't shot it yet with cast boolits, but it is a tack driver with j-word bullets.

Fantastic cartridge IMO. Done right there's not much gain in a 7 mag.

I have a Remington Mountain rifle in a .280. I use nickel plated brass for my .280, just so I can easily see the difference from the .270 and 30/06.

    Brass and Reamer

Nothing wrong with getting and or holding on to brass for rifles you don't currently have.
I have brass and a chambering reamer(280 AI) and no rifle.
Have a couple of VZ24 actions I can rebarrel but none done at this time.
Reloading dies as well both 280 and 280 AI.
One day may even get around to it.
    I'm thinking Encore barrel actually.

280 Remington? 7mm Express? Just another useless stepchild of the 30-06. Soon this one will take its place in the hall of dead cartridges where it belongs. Remington should have never tried to steal thunder from the mighty 270.

Boy I'll bet that gets a response!

Welllll... NTYMI!! I have both, and the 280 is much more versatile than my 270... more choices in projectiles certainly... only my 30-06 is more better than the 280!!! I do subscribe to the "bigger hole" theory's.. But you know what they say abt opinions.... no better than individual experience... I guess.. MV

do a search for 7mm and user name Boom Boom. There is a great post about the 7mm-06 which is the fore runner of the 280. I have been working with one for a few years, Boom Boom has done alot of work with his. The old thread is a good one and it gets a new post now and then.

And as far as the who needs it comment, here is my response. A muzzle loader will do the same thing as most of our cartridge rifles, just read some of the old accounts of killing wildlife in africa. They killed things with round ball stuffed from the far end of the tube. So do we NEED cartridge rifles? Do we need more than one caliber? Probably not but I like variety.

Also need to mention that I think the 30-06 is a good cartridge, and has been a good father to many a stepchild that works well.

I don't know, Pat, sounds like you almost have yourself talked into it already.
Knowledge I take to my grave is wasted.

I prefer to use cartridges born before I was.

Success doesn't make me happy, being happy is what allows me to be successful.

I have a 280 Mountain Rifle too. Bought it off one of my son's friends that needed money. It has a permanent home here now. I like it. Good for stretching across a big hay field I hunt. Taken 2 nice bucks the last 2 seasons. If I ever get a chance to go pronghorn hunting, its going along. Great caliber. Now if I can just keep it away from my oldest son....
If it doesn't shoot an ounce of lead, its a wimp load.

You know if it had not been for the 8mm Mauser there would not be a 270, 280 or a 30-06. as a cast only shooter given decent rifles the 8mm would be my first choice. having had a 280 in a model 70 fw it was a great shooter with j bullets but never got a chance to try cast but I'm sure it would be a decent shooter. just my 2 cents. I forgot that you owned them Ben.

Anyone want to trade a new bag of 50 brass in 280 for brass that will work in my 7.5 K31?

    PatMarlin:

I think it wiser to keep the 50 ea. 280 Rem. cases and spend some of that old mildewed money that you're holding and build yourself a nice 280 Rifle .

    Now for the confession...
I too owned a 280 Remington, and for 30 years I never ailed to get a lecture from my Father in Law, about how I should have bought a 270.

    Joe,

I had a no.1 in 22-250 that treated me the same. Iw was a consistant 1 inch at 200 but coul dnever do any better, it was nearly the same at 100. I shot it so much it was pretty worn when i traded it for a 1v in 25-06. I ended up selling it before I got that far along, irs needed dollars.

I am becoming fond of alot of calibers that I previously was not fond of orhad not found a sweet spot for. The 7mm in one of those, as is the 6.5x55.
