    long range 45-70

I have a 45-70 with no free bore and thinking of trying long range 800-1000 (not the KW mile).A ww case filled with 3f will hold 84 grains or more with .030 wad. Would you use a bullet patched to bore diameter or slightly over to breech seat?

I use .45-70s with 82 gr of Swiss 1.5 out to 1000 very effectively. Bullets are a "snug" bore diameter fit. They could easily go much further than 1000 with accuracy I am sure. I would use a thicker wad and courser powder, were I you.

Hey bodark, thanks I got to get everything picture perfect before I try it so I can go back and try to find what went wrong. As they say the journey is the fun part.

If my .44-77 loaded with 74 gr of 2F OE powder and a light 485 gr round nosed bullet will hit a full sized iron Buffalo at 1585 yards with using the Lawrence barrel sights and blade front, I'm sure your .45-70 with 83gr of 3F will do just fine for another 200 yards +- That iron buff looks awful small at that range. The other three guys put more of those lead splatters on him then I did but it was a fun time doing it.

That's a good thing because I don't think the journey ever ends.

A blade front sight would be a lost cause for me.

That is great. Wow! How long do you have to wait till you hear the ring back? What a blast that would be to shoot at that thing. I thought 200 yards was fun....

A blade is not any harder to see then a aperture or post tucked in a hood. What makes a shot that far off using the ladder sight is the lack of windage adjustment. The morning when we shot had good light but the wind was up blowing over the sand hills. Holding off on a spot on the ground two critter distance to stay on him was hard.
Don't count the .45-70 short. It will get the job done.

You have enough time to scratch your nose before you hear it hit.

Does a thicker wad work better for breech seating?

Charlie the thicker wad is to hold the gas back better so you don't get a gas cut. A .030 " especially in a large chamber will not hold back the gas.
A soft wad that expands like cork will do wonders. Especially holding the SD and ES down.

Just another piece of data.. My .38-55 was inconsistent with .030" LDPE wads when breech seating a bore diameter PP bullet. 0.060" definitely improved things.

My .45-70 PP rifle also likes FFg more than FFFg.

    Ah! I understand.
I forgot that this was about shooting bore diameter bullets from groove diameter chambers.

Yes Charlie. A groove diameter PP or GG would be a little different. You already have the groove filed with the bullet seated against the lead tight. A PP at groove has to get a bump in the hinder first to expand enough to fill the grooves.
