    newbie to paper patching

wanting to paperpatch my trapdoor. but have a few questions. if properly patched does the lead ever touch the bore or does it ride on paper? next lets say i slug my barrel its .457 how small a bullet dia. do i start with and how much overbore should the patch be?the lat question is what is the reasoning for hollow based bullets? i thought only mini balls used them.

When everything is done proper, the lead doesn't make contact with the barrel.
Generally you want a bullet that after patching is just at bore diameter.

Takes a 1.1 inch long 440 up to about .446 mould.

Start with a bullet around ,442 dia wrap with 2 wraps of onion paper or tracing paper (25% cotton fiber works well) of around .002 thickness. this will give a wrapped dia of 450 and should chamber just snug in the bore. The Book Loading and Shooting the Paper Patched bullet a beginners guide has alot of good information in it on getting started. It is written By Randolph S. Wright. Paper patching us a ball and done right the lead never touches the bore but everything is inter dependand on each other a smaller bullet requires thicker paper a larger bullet requires thhicker paper.

Bullet diameter all depends on if you are planing to patch to groove diameter or Bore, is your .457 figure a groove or bore measurement, many old Traps are all over on the place. Are you going to use BP or smokeless again makes a big difference.

black powder i haven't slugged it yet 457 was hypothetical coming from my rolling block.so an off the shelf 44 rifle mould would work

No you need to have a purpose built paper patch mould. Slick sided, and the diameter of your choosing.

Accurate moulds is the least expensive place to get moulds. There is a pretty good selection in his line up already, and if you want something tweeked a bit he'll do that for you. Buffalo Arms is the next place to look for quality blocks.

You really should slug your barrel, so you know for sure what diameters you are working with.
And, you really should do a cerro-safe cast of your chamber, so you know what the inner topography is like.

Then, you can decide which version of paper patching is most likely to work for you.
