Massive Lee slug and sabot testing.

Ok, I got to the range yesterday but I made a rookie mistake and didn't label over half of my loads tested. I know, I know.... I suck. I also just shoot from 25 yards to check velocity and give me some ideal on loads.
Next, I'll label them with tape. But this is what I got so far:

    350 gr XTP
    28 grs of 800X
Avg. velocity of 1330 fps using slugsrus.com sabots
No signs of over pressure. I'll work up 30 gr loads for them. Looks promising:

Massive Lee slug and sabot testing.

These here are the blur sabots loaded with 300 gr FTX and 28 grs of 800X. Avg velocity was 1300 fps Jury still out on this one.

This is 300 gr FTX with 25 grains of Longshot. Average velocity was 1000 FPS. I played it too safe on this load. Decent grouping.

This one here was the hottest load velocity wise. 350 gr XTP with 28 grs of 800X. Three shots measured 1899, 1886, and 1657. I used Kemen hulls with Winchester primers. On primer fell out and a little powder spilled. These where 8 star crimped. The only star crimped in the whole test.

I learned a little in this testing. First kind of any testing I've done so I'll know what to expect next time. I really didn't have all my ducks in an order, but I sure had fun.

I'll be out again in a few weeks. This time, I'm documenting everything.

Just wanted to note that the 800X loads with 28 gr and a 350 gr bullet actually developed more velocity (and much more energy) than the lighter 300 gr loads did with the exact same powder charge. The lighter loads would also have much lower pressure, for sure. If you look at Longshot data in lighter loads, you'll see that everything uses over 30 grains, and some much more than 30 grains. You may need a faster powder, since you're only shooting 3/4 oz loads here. Look here for some ideas:

I don't have a lot of 3 in hulls. BPI is sold out. However, the clear Fiocchi hulls are close to 3 in with a clear overshot card and a light crimp roll.

Massive Lee slug and sabot testing.

But I will test them at 50 and 100 yards. For my standard, I'm comparing all these hand loads to Remington 3 inch Accutips which out of my fully rifled and scoped slug barrel that shot 3 sabots in one hole at 25 yards, about 1.75 inches at 100 yards, and 5 inches at 200 yards shooting off a loaded Caldwell leadsled. Any reload that will hold 5 inches at 100 yards will be suitable for hunting.

I recovered some hulls that I'll post later tonite. They tell a pretty neat story.

    Stay tuned.....

Ok, 99% of the blue sabots recovered looks like they can be used again. Only a few separated from the slug. That leaves me to believe I got room to power up those loads.
300 and 350 grain FTX, XTP
    Under 28 grs of 800X

These sabot wads are from BPI. I was only able to recover two. These aren't supposed to separate from the bullet.

This one is the only PT1205 hull I could find. I think these are better than the PT1215. However, I did not trim the petals.
