    Toaster ovens and their accuracy

How many of you have checked your oven you use to bake your pc'd bullets in? I did and discovered that my oven is actually pretty accurate. I have my oven set for 400 degrees farenheit and the oven thermometer I have reads it hovering between 395 and 405 degrees. I bake mine for 20 minutes and they all cure just fine.

My toaster oven is a cheap Toastmaster I got from Wal Mart for less than $20.

My $18 B&D from Kroger was off by 60°. I can still set it using the baking thermometer and get by with it, but the convection toaster does a much better job and holds 5X as many boolits.
I never even checked the thermostat on the convection oven, I gutted the controls and wired it straight for PID as soon as I got it.

I use mine for heat treating bullets and checked it with 2 different thermometers. It was off almost 50 degrees and had to recalibrate it. I'm going to hood up a PID to it soon.

$30 wally world black and decker. Has baked more than a couple hundred lbs of bullets. Came with a 4 year warranty.

    Beagle333,
Where did you place your temperature sensor/probe? Did you write up a post about it?

Mine's horribly inaccurate but quite easy to use once I figured it out.

My convection oven was somewhat accurate depending on if it was preheated or not and also depending on how many boolits were in the oven. In the end I also gutted the wiring and hooked up a PID unit/thermocoupler so the probe is right there inside the oven hovering around one inch off the top of the boolits, dead center of the pan. Now I know for sure what is going on and I don't have to adjust the oven settings as I look through the glass at the oven thermometer.

I didn't do a write-up here. I think I did one on TFL. I'll have to go look.
My convection toaster was a rotisserie model as well, and when I took the rod/motor off from the left side, it provided a handy pre-made hole to stick the 8" thermocouple through, so that it is about halfway between the top and bottom racks. It was just perfect.
I don't have a pic of it handy. It's outside tonight, I have been alternating loads of sheet lead in it all day to dry it out as I was smelting a big load of pure.

Have a $100+ convection oven. I did a "profile" of it with my porfessional temp monitor and found the cavity was within 4 degrees of the dial setting. Luck, I guess! Those bi-metal tstats are not that acurate.....normally.

I didn't check my wifes toasted oven because she hasn't complained and it's only used for toast. My convection oven that I cook boolits in though is right on plus minus 2* F because it is controlled by a PID.

My toaster oven is from Goodwill ($5.95) Black and decker. Thermostat off by more than 50 degrees. I use a PID on mine. K thermocouple is attached to the middle of the metal shelf tha the boolits bake on. It is under the NS foil.

The first thing I did was drill a hole into the top of mine, even before I plugged it in to test.
I was not gona take a chance, put my lead thermometer in and marked the dial for 400*F
with a sharpie, it was close to 20*F off.

I plug my toaster oven into a outlet connected to a PID controller and toss the thermocouple into the oven.

10 dollar BD from Goodwill, 400 on the dial = 390 with the infrared. Baked over 3000 so far another 1000 ready to bake.

Another B&D user from Wally World here. The dial at 330 is actually 395F. Works great though.

This is my little B&D. The setup is the same on the bigger EuroPro Convection model too, but it has 3 racks and much more capacity.
This one isn't convection, but the temp has gotta be close, because the thermocouple probe is right there with the boolits.

Cool. Gives me an idea about where to put the probe on mine.
