45-70 400 gas check... convince me

As a matter of course I have always used gas checks and hard alloy to get zero leading.
I want to shoot softer alloy (10-12 BHN) PC'd plane base bullets at 1450...roughly 25 grains 2400...
what am I going to get??

I wonder if the gas check forum probably only gets a little bit of use. That would explain why you didn't get a good answer.

I use the plain base Lee 405 mold over a charge of 2400 I can't remember. I really think 45/70 is a round where gas checks aren't often necessary.

I will say from my experience for my trap door no gas check under 1200fps, for my Marlin gas checks yes , but the same 405gr FP boolit that feeds it also feeds a .458 Win. Mag.

    What will you get?

    Dunno.

I do know that you can shoot a 12-ish BHN 500 grain plain base boolit to ~1370-ish without leading. So what happens when you slightly reduce the drive bands and slightly increase the speed? Is that enough to put you over into leading land? I just don't know.

What I DO know, is that if 1450 leads, all you *should* need to do is back off the velocity a smidge and you should be fine again. But that is a lot of 'should'.

Ive never used gas checks, and I drive 405gr boolits to 1750fps, and have never leaded any of the 3 rifles I shoot them though.

You really need to try powder coating, it is the best thing I've done in 50yrs.
It is so simple a 10 yr. old can do it.If you need some help let me know.

Thanks for the replies... In 30 years I've just never has leading issues .... For all the right reasons of alloy, velocity, twist, hardness, etc, so I'm in what is for me uncharted territory.
Yes, I am now a powder coating but have not yet shot any.
I'll try the lee 300 and 420 coated and NOT hardened and let you know how I come out.
