Close race between 30wcf and 375 Win. Both in Win 94, one pre 64 the other a BB94. I like the light weight and handling qualites of these guns and can still use the factory sights effectively. Guess I would go for the 375 loaded as a +p 38-55 it is an awesome deer rifle. Loaded with 10gr of unique( or 2028) it is like an overgrown 22lr and cuts clover leafs to the limits of my vision! It was the easiest rifle to get a good cast load of any I have fiddled with, as well.

I live out in the desert, and the .30-06 has never let me down. So my answer is the same as the other thread, 1895 Winchester in .30-40 would be my preference but I'd be happy with the same gun in .30-06 as well.

it would be impossible to choose just one gun or caliber for all my hunting. For deer hunting here in OH we can now use rifles in strait walled calibers and I own way to many legal choices but I would pick one in 38-55 as one of my possible favorites.

Not at all. The .45-70 will win out every time, however, but .38-55 or .38-50 would be just fine too. .40-65, .40-70 are a couple more. But hte .45-70s it THE all around cartridge and the specialist cartridge at the same time.

    Whatever.

Jedman needs a straightwalled cartridge. His deer are bigger than yours.

Well... for tree rats, rabbits and deer... I would use my 357. It can shoot soft 38's for little game and a 235 cast WFN drops deer.

Someone say tree rats, rabbits and deer? I use my .41 Mag and add a grey fox. When your hunting you use what you brought.

    My signature says it all
    The .357 Magnum......
    1935
Major Douglas Wesson, using factory loads, which were a 158 gr. soft lead bullet, traveling 1515 fps, from an 8 3/4" barreled S&W, producing 812 ft. lbs of muzzle energy.
    Antelope - 200 yards (2 shots)
    Elk - 130 yards (1 shot)
    Moose - 100 yards (1 shot)
    Grizzly Bear - 135 yards (1 shot).

It kind of makes one wonder, why today, it will bounce off anything bigger than a rabbit

I have quite a few levers. I live in Ohio and I have decided the 375W is the perfect Ohio Deer gun
I traded my Marlin 375w off and got a #3 Ruger 375W so I could shot pointed bullets to increase
range & accuracy. But If I was to have one lever action to use for everything, I would have to go
back to slugs in Ohio and pick my old Win 1895 in 30govt06. It's my favorite and it's a toss up
between it and a Rem 141 in 35 Rem , for which one has shot the most deer.

I know this is personal opinion but unless you just hunt one area or one species of game a pistol
cartridge or straight wall = rainbow trajectory. The number of votes for 45/70 amazes me. I have
a old Marlin 95 and have owned a lot of other 45/70s and it's far from a doit all caliber. I think to
Do it all a 308, 30/06 would be the most practical. They have the power for big game and better
long range capability. If I had my druthers here in Ohio I would be packing my Marlin Marauders
    30/30 or 35.

I love this thread I keep changing by mind. Today I am thinking the ultimate lever gun would be the 450 Marlin small game to Africa it could do it all.

Except since you're here, I assume you're a handloader like the rest of us, so the .45-70 can do everything the .450 Marlin can, except do it with cheaper and more common brass. And for someone that doesn't load their own, the factory loads for the .450 Marlin will be top end loads, so the small game utility is out the window.

For what it's worth, I love lever guns, and have a few, but they range from .22LR on up to .45-70, so don't take my word as gospel cause I obviously can't make up my mind as to what's perfect either, but instead grab whatever is appropriate for the job at hand.
I passed my last psych eval, how bout you?

Lots of calibers work, some are more versatile than others. As a reloader and bullet caster, almost all the mentioned calibers become more useful 2 to 3 fold. Evidently there are some of us ( but I think that number is really really small) that would purchase a rifle that does everything due to budget restraints or space restraints. Some feel that one rifle should work for the never planned lottery drawing for elk or moose. And that it should be enough for Alaskan Brown Bear even though most here have not been to Alaska.

So with that said, a good old 30-30 does a lot from loaded with lead pistol bullets as light as 85 grains to a full power 190 jacket bullet. But don’t most here think lever guns are addicting? With that said: Marlin 39A-22, 336 waffle top 35 Rem., 1894-44 mag., 1895 45-70 sporter, Win. 94-30-30 and a Uberti/Colt Burgess 1883-45 Colt ( these are really smooth fun shooters). My last purchase will be a 1894C 357 for a non inflated price.

Given the old .303 British has probably killed more moose and other game around the world than any other cartridge I should mention the Winchester 1905 model. The rifles show up for sale up here occasionally.
