The first 50 that I loaded and tested were like little lasers... they don't punch nice round holes in paper, but they go where I want them to.

Two days ago I made dummy rounds for my Cobra CA 380 to see what OAL worked best with the Lee TL356-95-RF. .900 worked the best. So yesterday I loaded 10 each of 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7 and 2.8 grains of TiteGroup to see what works best.

Mine is my gun room / reloading shop all in one so I'm heading down shortly to dig out some guns and ammunition for tomorrow. Heading up to the range with a good friend of mine for a day of shooting.

I may have passed my "Best Before" date, but I haven't reached my "Expiry" date!

This morning I discovered my unfired Ruger Stainless Flattop 45 Colt cylinder has throats measuring .450-.449, while the 45 ACP cylinder measures .451. I cannot determine if I should send it out to open up, or just buy the tools to do it myself!

    De-cappped and dry tumbled 44Spl brass - 160 pieces

    De-capped and dry tumbled 44Mag brass - 340 pieces.

De-capped, and in line for dry tumbling is the 357Mag brass - 650 pieces.

Standing here, looking at a box of ~1450 pieces of 38Spl brass that needs processing, and thinking I'll save it for another day....

I need a bigger bowl on my dry tumbler.

Kinda did the same as Bookworm. Decapped 1,300 pieces of (mostly) Lake City 7.62x51 and got a bunch of it in the rotary tumbler.

There was a handful of pieces of SBS headstamp in this batch, and they DO NOT want to give up their primers. In the end they did, though.

    Greetings Casters,

Big batch of NOE 432-282 WFN complete. Bullets powder coated in Randyrat dark silver. Load is 21.2 Grains of H110, WLLP, mixed brass. This is a 2 inch load, been testing this for 2 months before I went into the batch reload. Seated past the cannelure with a collett crimp. Packed and ready for hunting season/ seasons.

NOE 432-262 WN is a work in progress. It measures out to almost the same as an XTP. Going to try Unique (9 grains) for a 1200-1300 fps rifle load. Or 22.5, 23 or 23.5 grains of H110. I casted them hard t handle the latter load better.

I ordered a new Lyman casting dipper, my 50 year old one was too short for the Magnum Melter Pot I have now. This one is longer and the bowl is larger...Sweet! I fired up the pot and cast some fishing sinkers...a few pyramid and a few bank sinkers. Just as an excuse to try the dipper. I should have got this one years ago...I like both the larger capacity and longer handle rod .
If you are left handed, the handle can be mounted on the left side....neat !

Finished using up my cross grain paper patches and cut some new strips and patches with the grain. Patches a dozen or so bullets and now it's bed time.
    Back to casting tomorrow.

I've got the huge red paperback. You will have many hours of reading in there.

I like the book, but many loads were developed with powder that is (now) long obsolete. I realize some may yet have a keg of that discontinued-in-1965 powder, but for the most part, that data is useless.

Also, regarding cast usage - these days, the trend is more to heavy-for-caliber boolits. When Mr Waters was working, the trend was different, and too, those projectiles were just not available.

In the case of 9mm - lots of 115g loads, some 124-125 g loads, very little heavier.

    Same in 38Spl and 357, 44Mag, etc.
Not alot of heavy boolit data.

That being said, his approach is noteworthy.

I have PO Ackley's Handbook for Shooters and Reloaders also . It lists 125 gr bullets in every 25 cal 25-35 and up I've never seen one .

I also purchased Ken's Pet loads ( the big red book ) to go with his Notebook . It's more about knowledge than data . The Lyman 47&48th have data for 45-90,110 and 120 but nothing for the 6.8 Remington now pushing 25 yrs old . The 48th listed data for the WSM line too .

Not a lot of call for information on the 1969 475 hp 390 cid Ford but I have a book that includes that also .

The old books give us a guide to expand our personal knowledge base and learn more about why some of the old school things soldier on and some are just a pan flash .

Where would you find data for 250-265 gr bullets in 45 ACP ? Have you looked for Schofield data lately ? 25 Souper or 280 AI ? The Carcanos ? Those just aren't in the new books .

Sure the powders are long gone , some of them have the same name but are completely different than they were at the time of writing . If you have a guide powder loading that survives for a fast and slow like Unique and 4350 or 4831 and a mid range of 4198,4895,3031 then all of that old data , with proper caution , is usable . Maybe not as published but as a guide .

I'm looking forward to reading about the 7-30 Waters , it fits with my fat chambered 7x6.8 SPC .

"It's more about knowledge than data."

Very well said, and I agree 100%.

My statement was more for other, newer reloaders that perhaps think the huge book has a huge amount of data.
It does, just a good bit of the data is unusable today.

His methods are something to learn from, and emulate.

I enjoy the book immensely, however, one must know what it is, and what it isn't. I have purchased older books about reloading, specifically to expand my general knowledge of the subject.
Ken Waters' tome is an excellent start.

I'll probably catch some flak for this, but I read up on it first and it's safe... Wet tumbled a bunch of 40 Cal HST pulled bullets I bought a while back. They were pretty dirty, but 20 minutes in the wet tumbler with some Lemi and Zip Wax (without pins) and they're as pretty as can be.
