    Loose Mosin ..

Just a question here to our knowledgeable members ....
    I have a Mosin 91/59 ...
Nice rifle , matching numbers , one little item tho..
The entire action is loose in the stock , it can shift an 1/16th or a bit more at times ...
Have never dismantled one but not afraid to , ..
What would be the cure and what would be the best way to go about it ?
    Thanks much

Are the receiver screws tight? The high desert can dry things out. If that is of no help, shims or glass-bedding will be required to achieve bearing surfaces between the stock and receiver.

    Best Regards,
    Tom

Even if the stock screws are tight on a MN, the stock must be fit to the recoil lug to elemanate movement front to back.
Point bedding the lug to the stock will usually do the trick.
But MN's also are known for excessive clearance between the bottom of the receiver and the flat inside the stock.
This can be shimmed or even glass bedded.
The original stocks had a Brass shim nailed to the stock to fix this condition.
But if it was ever Re-Armored, it may not be correct.

The MN is "Bedded" like the Swiss K-31, not like the Remington 700... They don't go for full action contact - but rather simply support UNDER the front recoil lug and the rear tang of the action. If you check on the Enthusiast sites - you will find pictures of this with the little brass shims mentioned above. There is no side to side bedding.

If the action wobbles back and forth in the stock - try tightening the action screws... Probably loose...

If the screws are all the way tight - check that the magazine is inserted properly and is not hitting the bottom of the action... The magazine must have a very small gap visible (like a 0.010-0.030" feeler gage gap) between itself and the bottom of the action - or the screws won't tighten the action to the stock... Solution to this is to shim the magazine down in the stock with small shims under the magazine screw mount areas.. You can find pictures of this as well in the enthusiast websites.

    Thanks

thank you so much gentlemen ... will use your suggestions closely .
From what I understand , the 59's were a re-arsenal 91-30 so some of your points here will be followed .

yes the 59 was a shortened up 91/30 and had the range markings on the rear sight above 1000 milled off. mine is a very good shooter, probably due to the thicker than stock 91/30 barrel

I glass bedded one of mine just like I do the Mausers and other rifles. Consistently shoots less than 2" at 100 yards. Does have a scout scope on it.

I'd have that puppy glass bedded so quickly, it would make your head spin.

Acra-glass if you want, but how about tightening the action screws first? The rear receiver tang is machined at an angle that holds the receiver to the rear as long as the screws are tight!
Shims under the receiver were mainly Finnish, not very common on Russian assembly.

I have a couple fins that have the brass and tin shims in the action channel. one of my 91/30 snipers also is shimmed

maybe pick up an orphan stock at a show and drop the action in it
