I scored my first bit of lead today

Well, I called a couple of local tire shops today and one of them told me to stop by and see what they have. One of the guys in the back was saving WW to go to the scrap yard. He said they usually reuse the clip-ons but he would sell me what he had. After looking at it I offered him $10.00 and took the box home. I just sorted them and ended up with 37 lbs. of SOWW, 8 lbs. of COWW and 27 lbs. of junk. All-in-all not too bad for only going about 4 blocks from my house.

I'd say you got your moneys worth.

Most of us have written of tire stores. Many areas will not sell weights or have gone to almost all Zn/Fe. My last batch of weights was not even worth hauling home, even though it was free.

Check out your local scrap yards and see if they sell to the public. Most will. That is where I get all my lead these days. Anything from pure to lino to hardball to pure Sn! Just hauled home 380# of hardball last month. And sheet after sheet of pure lead. I do not mess with range scrap.

    Keep on lookin!

That's still a good lead to junk ratio, and about 25c/lb after ingotizing. I'd call that a windfall.

    I would agree. Nice score.

Sounds like a relationship worth cultivating. Half dozen donuts, or a $5 pizza could go a long way to establishing you as the better choice than the scrap yard for lead disposal.
