    Daughter's First Deer

My 10 yr old daughter got her first deer last night. With about 15 minutes left of shooting time she spotted him walking down the hill into a picked bean field. She was using a 243 with 87 gr Hornady's loaded to about 2,500 fps. (about 600 fps slower than a full load)
She was very calm, slowly moved the safety the fire position and took aim. She whispered to me the trigger was not working, her rifle has a 3 position safety like a M 70 and it was just off of the last detent. I told her to aim a little high since her rifle was zeroed at 100 yds and I estimated the range to be 200 yds. The first shot was high, the second shot hit the lungs and broke the spine. He went down. She was so excited after he went down, when we came up to him I told her we needed to approach with caution and told her that if his eye were closed he is probably still alive. Eyes were open and we poked with a stick to make certain. She bent down and started looking at his hooves and antlers. It was an unusually calm evening last night with temps in the upper 20's.

After checking the deer in at the game commission office we stopped by to show Grandpa, he was very surprised and happy for her.

We went hunting during the Nebraska late firearm deer season last year and she endured very damp single digits temperatures with high winds.Click image for larger version.

The look on her face just plain says it all. Please tell the young lady congratulations for a job well done and that we are proud of her for not getting discouraged after toughing it out last year!

    Well done Dad.
