    Hardness question

Back about 15 years ago the guy that got me started casting gave me 10 pounds of linotype. He suggested I mix it with wheel weights. So I mixed it 8 pounds of coww with one pound of lino and air cooled. About what BHN what this be? And about what would it be if I water dropped them? Thanks.

Download the free Excel spreadsheet alloy calculator and all questions will be answered on mixing and hardness. Do a search on here and plug in your values to play what-if.

Waterdropping is only a pseudo hardness.

You might want to check with lasc.us website to see what is there on water hardening guestimates.

I've tested water dropped boolits cast from straight COWW, and they reach 18 to 20 BHN after 4 weeks of aging. Adding a pound of linotype to 8 pounds of COWW does raise the antimony content, but the increase in hardness will be small......maybe 1 BHN.

My own stash of COWW is pretty old, and when air cooled, boolits cast from this are around 12 BHN.
