    What is needed.

I have purchased some damascus knife blanks from a member here. These are exellant looking blanks, but not ground at all. The total knife is all the same thickness.

What do I need and what do I have to have to make a finished blade as far as working the metal goes.
This is going to be a long range project, and as I have had in my mind for several years to get into knife makeing later on, I do not mind buying what I need to do the job right. At least for the time being, if I cam manage to make a blade without butchering it, I will send them off to be heat treated.

Well, you see, all you need is some sand paper, and a LOT of time...

    Just kidding.

If if you could give us more information, we could help you better. What kind of blade grind are you looking to achieve (hollow-ground, convex-ground)? What blade length and profile? Fixed or folding? Handle materials? What is the thickness of the blanks you have?

Give us your vision, and we can be more specific about the suggestions.

I have not decided on handle material, but it will probably be wood.

I will be wanting to start getting what I need to work the metal first. Like I said this will likely be a long drawn out project. lol

The blades are 3 3/4 long and a good 1/8 in or a little more thick.
As far as what grind, I am not sure, but thinking hollow ground.
3 of them are a standard drop point and one is a bird point blade.

I actually do have an ooold belt sander, purpose built for knoves. I bought this years ago, have never used it, and am not 100% sure I could even get belts for it anymore. I think it is probably for the final stages anyway.

I have plenty of sandpaper, but not sure I have that much time left. lol

A good start is to use a good file to file the blade to shape.
Once it is shaped, you can use sandpaper to clean your filing marks before heat treating.

That will work if I wanted a flat grind blade I guess, and maybe what I wind up doing. I am really wanting to look into and possibly learn to hollow grind them.

Hollow ground needs a grinder with contact wheel.

Best buy to learn is a book on knife making
