    Uses For Zinc?

I recently got a good supply of wheel weights from a fantastic local tire shop owner, mostly lead but a good chunk of them are zinc as well. I've read up enough to not go down the zinc boolit rabbit hole but I was wondering if there are any other uses for this zinc aside from scrapping it. Thanks for the help gang!

I smelt mine into ingots. Scrap value around here is about $0.35/lb.......just about the value of scrap wheel weights

That's not a bad rate, I might just sell mine as well and avoid any headaches with upcycling them to something else.

Cannon balls, fishing sinkers, LARGE Cal. Boolits, Shotgun "Ball" and Shotgun Slugs (for cylinder and rifled bores only), Front end weight and wheel weights for tractors, small boat anchors, "Soft" anvil surface for forming small parts, Forend and butt stock weights for rifles and shotguns. A lot of uses that "cast iron" is used for. Much easier to cast than "cast iron" & about the same weight.
Getting old is the best you can hope for.

Ah interesting, I've been considering cast .410 slugs, do you think zinc would suffice for that or should I stick with lead for those?

I've got a cat litter bucket full of zinc wheel weights. I've been looking for a use for them myself. I though about making some sand or plaster molds and casting decorative items.

I've been reading up on zinc and it seems like a lot of people like to make jewelry and other artistic molds with it. Maybe it doesn't get the blood pumping like shooting but a pretty good use for what would otherwise be scrap.

I make shot and my machine is very sensitive to zinc, so hand sorting ww is a must. I have a guy who buys the zinc ones from me for .42 a pound he makes cannon balls from them. Says he can use less powder to get the lighter zinc ball the same distance as a lead one. makes sense to me.

Yes it is. You really ought to use steel molds for zinc.

Here is a link to a recent thread where we talked a bit about casting with zinc. It comes up a lot so I'm sure there are more threads out there.
