I have this vision of a 45-70

Lugging that big ol heavy Octagon barrel 4570 from the reloading room to the range got me to thinking <that is kinda scary>.

I have this Remington Roller smokeless action clogging up good space.

Ok, I find a nice 45-70 barrel and turn it down (leaving a place for a scope block) to some reasonable diameter at the muzzle so I can mount a nice hooded sight of some kind.

I ain't looking for a high dollar fancified long range gun, just a good shooter with 26-28 inch round barrel that will send that cast boolit into the black (or just in that little spot behind the shoulder).

If it is good enough to plink at something 300-500 yards away that is all well and good.

Ideas being solicited and gladly accepted, barrel, twist and anything else needed to make it a reality.

Here is a Rolling Block with a 26 inch barrel.



The barrel is octagon/round and from memory the gun weighs 8+ pounds.

For me it shoots minute of whitetail so I am happy with it.

If you go full round barrel it should trim some of the weight as would a slimmer profile.

This happens to be factory issue from Pedersoli.

I have another RB that is full octagon with an 18" barrel. That is soon to be shipped off to have a 50 caliber 26" round barrel installed. That will be cut for the 50-70.

I figure the larger bore and round barrel should get me in the low 8 pound range.

Depending on the condition of your "Roller", you could sell it and buy an H&R, either the BC or the Handi-Rifle. They shoot good, are light-weight, and you'd have money left over to buy other stuff.

My plan was to sell a Hakim, CZ52 (7.62X45) Rifle, Martini Henry large action, and maybe even the 40 some odd inch 54 cal Douglas BP barrel to finance this project and have cash left over for some brass.

I like the H+Rs and they are all accurate (least the ones I have seen on the range), but I have a 45-70 and 219 Donaldson Wasp Roller already and kinda like them!

This would just be a totin weight gun!

You could go with a Green Mtn. #3 winchester tapered round barrel 28 inch,in 45 with a 1-18 twist. That'ld let you shoot minute of deer loads, or moa at 1000 .

I always thought a 6 pounder was doable but never thought about a 5.

Anyways bet the addled ol bugger is agonna take a 45 colt barrel from one of them Itralian or brazul made winchester fakes, and jb weld it into the action of a worn out ol roller that 's been ground down ot fit the profile. That's bout what he's got in mind.

TCLouis... I understand you liking your Rollers. We all have preferences, things we like. I've never had a rolling block but would like to try one sometime. They are just more $$ than I can afford. The H&R's are affordable and have done a good job for me so that prompted my suggestion. Hope you find what you want.

I have a couple of short barreled 45/70's. The Ruger is 22" and the old Pedersoli Roller is 26". They both shoot cast bullets to nearly MOA. I love shooting them as they sit so nice.

I also had a Pedersoli Roller Buffalo which had a very heavy 22" barrel and although it shot fine was not well balanced. My 45/90 Sharps has a big, long heavy barrel and although weighty has such beautiful balance I always seem to grab it first.
Go ahead with your project, you cannot go wrong.

MtGun44... I'm with you. I'd not want to shoot a .45-70 that's any lighter than my BC. With light bullets I've shot to just over 1800 FPS... not bad at all. But one time while working up loads for the 500 gr. I got a little speedy with a load that went over 1500 FPS. I have no desire to do that again in this light of a rifle. And, realisically, there's no need to do so.

I don't plan on entering a bench rest competition with it.

I am forever in awe of the beautiful English and Irish rifles that combine power and light weight.

They make 7 pound double rifles and here we think a 7 pound single barrel is light.

My thoughts were to have an American "Express" rifle, for hunting in the high up places.

After working up a load, I doubt I would shoot more than 5 shots a year, if that many.

So far Oops has not gotten back to me so maybe he's not interested.

Betwixt the projects he's got going, the crappy weather that's been pounding on them, and the problems associated with being so close to the Mexican border, I think he's gotten a bit busy in the last few days.
Haven't heard from him for a bit now, but unless some tuff meansumbeech got his scalp he'll be back up when the alligators gets down to ankle level.

This was built for me on a Rem RB smokless action. The gunsmith is Donald Ballenger in Lakeland, Fl. Barrel is Douglas premium, 28". Price I don't remember.
