    $140 Mosin

Picked this up the other day at a LGS for $140. It was wrapped in white camo Ace bandage tape. It's a 1933 Hex receiver. Not a Tula, don't know how to spell the name but I see people refer to them as IZZYS. Had a cheap repo PU scope and base. And a nice turned down bolt. I tried to shoot it with the repo scope, it was junk. Plus I had to crawl half way up the stack to get the eye relief correct. I put an old Weaver 1.5 X I had around on it. The screws in the rings and the mount for rough elevation had the slots stripped out. So I went to the Farm and Home store and bought metric cap screws to replace them. The mount had to much ground off for the left and right rough adjustment so I drilled and tapped a 10X32 cap screw into the mount to take the place of shims. The trigger is about the same as opening the door on a boxcar. I'll work on that tomorrow. Hope you enjoy the photos.

And just for giggles here's a PKM with me at thr trigger.

Mosins with pu mounts have a look that I can only describe as....soviet. That's a nice looking rifle and with a bolt handle that long I suspect "sticky bolt" is a phrase you're unlikely to encounter.

    This is my 3rd 91/30 I had a 44 in a nice laminated stock but a buddy wanted it. I have a 1928 also.

Well I bought it because it was the hex receiver. After taking it to the range. It doesn't shoot well at all. Tore it apart a little more and the scope base is not installed correctly. Tried to slug the barrel and there wasn't enough rifling to grab the round ball I used. Muzzle has no rifling. Going to counter bore to see if I can salvage the old girl. If not I may send off for a McGowan heavy barrel.

Like most milsurps, they are not getting cheaper. The first two I bought was $69 and were in very good condition, especially considering their age and years of use.

The days of cheap ones is gone. My first rifle was a Mosin bought at the local hardware store for $19.95 and came with a box of ammo. I think it was 1967

    161,
There are good 91-30 barrels out there if you wanted to keep it looking the same.

You didn't head my warnings; don't but a nagant especially a nice hex one and if it has a mount even one that needs work all is lost. Best buy a new safe and get that second mortgage now. At least its a "cheap" addiction. Very nice old war horse sir.

Is the rifling indeed gone or just hiding under a bunch of fouling?

Nice setup, the bolt knob is a little gaudy but cool set up and a great price.

Mosin triggers can be refined very nicely. I have a 1st WW Remington that has a fare thee well trigger on it. A nice addition is to weld a ring onto the cocking piece which makes putting the safety on much easier.

Seems like a pretty good deal to me, even with the worn bore by the muzzle.
If backboring doesn't solve your accuracy problems, try running an electric cleaner in it.

I have an M44 that looked awful until it spent about 16 hours having all the fouling removed via electrolysis. It's still a bit of a challenge to load for since the bore mikes .316", but at least you can see rifling in it now!

    Hello,

I'll have a trigger coming up done in about a week if interested.

The name you're looking for is Izhevsk. It is pronounced Iz-YEV-sk.

Surely it's not an original sniper..? Those receivers are hard and I don't think the type of person who would strip screws would be the same type to able to drill and tap straight. Could be wrong.

No it's not an original sniper. Mount was put on to far forward and the holes are drilled crocked. I did a trigger job and it turned out well. I haven't gotten it back bored yet. I been doing some youtube on electrolysis. I think I'll give that a try on the bore.
