OK an update. Haven't been to the range yet but did slug the barrel. It slugs .310 in the grooves and .3075 on the lands. Pretty tight for a well used Mosin. Can't wait to try it but it is supposed to rain tomorrow. Oh well, Maybe Saturday. I'll let you know.

Well I made it to the range today. Too windy to get much in the way of grouping but it shoots a little to the right. I'll have to drift the front sight over before I go back. It shot to correct elevation with surplus ammo just a little to the right. I had to raise the rear sight to the 400 meter notch to get it to correct elevation with my cast loads developed for my 91/30. (about 1600 fps) When the wind dies down again one day this week I'll try to get to the range for some groups.

Oh well. Here I go again! Just had a 1937 '98 Mauser follow me home. Wood is in very good shape but dirty. Most blue still there. (est.80-90%) Bore excellent with sharp rifling.

The guy that did that gun is GOOD. I know what you mean about milsurps, my first was a Garand from the CMP. I got it for $167 plus the range fee to qualify. Wish I had had a few friends to buy some more for me. I picked up a yugo 98 mauser yesterday at my LGS. Saw a guy looking at a gun and putting it back in the rack, I thought "that's a mauser" this store never has them only a few nagants and sometimes a LE. I looked at the tag, and $175 so I thought something's wrong with it. I put it back, left the store, then came back. I picked it up again, looked it over, nice dark wood, looks like walnut or the like. I went to the counter and told the guy I wanted to see the bolt for it. He handed it to me and I put it in the gun, couldn't get the safety to operate. I told him something must be wrong with it so we took it out and exercised the spring a few times, put it back in and it hasn't failed yet. SO it left with me. A fellow milsurp nut, (an old friend that I just turned into a fellow gun nut in the last couple of years) called me and we went to try it out today. I had to drift the front sight a little, but we have it hitting at 100 yards just about 10 inches high. I think I'm going to order a extra tall front sight from Brownells and bump it in. I had intended to ream it out to an 8mm-06 since I bought out an estate sale and there were lots of components for the 06 version, but now I think I may keep it an 8mm mauser. Any advice or opinions on this. It's my first mauser and it looks great as is.

This is my third Mauser and I now have 3 Mosins also. A couple of other milsurp rifles and a handgun or twoo. Man it just never ends.

If you know how many milsurps you have, you don't have enough of them.

    aspangler,

I got my first military surplus arm in 1958. It was a 7.35MM Carcano M1938 for $13.88. I am still collecting today and have two vaults for the "Keepers." I especially like SMLEs, Mausers, Krags and Springfields. Most of my military surplus arms "digest" my cast boolits well.

My favorite 8mm Mausers like my Lyman #323471, 215 grain semi-spritzer and IMR4198. I will hunt bear with that recipe tomorrow here in PA.

I started this obsession with a pair of Mosin's, (Idiot!) followed by an SKS. Currently fighting Mauser fever, and I don't even want anyone to mention the names attached to SMLE (Shudder)

I just know that one of these days I'm going to pull the trigger on a M44 carbine. (I'm holding on, but it is chewing away inside there)

Sigh, if only I'd stuck to Rugers and Remington's it would be at least a little better. (The little voice in my head is going "M14-m30 and Military Rolling blocks by Remington, ohhh yeah yeah yeah" Shutup self.)

I think that was my first one as well. Problem though after it arrived in the mail, my mother discovering it was a gun, sent it back. My mother didn't like guns and sent the mail order company a nasty letter. About a month later I got a check from a company in Chicago minus the 3 or 4 bucks shipping. I was 14 or 15 and I believe the total with shipping and some ammo was under 20 bucks. Found the mail order ad in a magazine in my school library. Pretty sure it was Italian but best I recall it was the lowest price rifle that included ammo. If I could only get in a time machine and go back to the good ol'days and buy mil-surps mail order.
