    Looking at a Rolling Block

So a buddy called me to tell me about a gun he thought I would like. (is he kidding?)

It's a Pedersoli Rolling block in great shape.
Caliber 40-65 Target sights, 36" heavy barrel, 1" at the muzzel.
The model is a RO9103 (not sure if that's "zero" or an "oh" after the "R"
I did a search and found no such model, maybe it's an old one.
He's asking $850.00 for it, and I was wondering if anyone can help me with a value for this gun.

Thanks for the info, I was concerned it might be an older one of poor quality.

There should be a two letter code on the barrel, that would tell you how old it is.

Here's a link to the date table

So now that I can date it, what years had the soft receivers?

I have two Pedersoli rollers....one's a Bodine 34" and the other is more standard 30", both wear vernier sights from Lee Shaver. Both are sweet shooters, and quality is about top notch.
Your price? Look carefuuly; condition and individual assessment against your need/want and weight in your pocketbook should determine "a good value".

I just did a search for 'Pedersoli soft receivers'.
The only hit which mentioned a problem was your Post #6 in this thread.

Where did you get the idea that Pedersoli was ever troubled with a soft receiver problem?

I bought my perdersoli rolling block back in 1975. back in those days they were using metal that had a L in the metal number. some of these receivers were a little soft. this was explained to me by the owner at vti gunparts. on my rifle the only parts that I found soft were the block which I replaced and the hammer. the newer rifles use a different metal for the receivers so if you buy one that is made from 2000 on up no need to worry. Give vti gunparts a call. they will give you the lowdown. HTH

As far as where I heard this, let's just say probably an internet rumor.

What Id id was to write Pedersoli directly, I got a reply in one day!
They were surprised that the "rumor" was still around and assured me of high quality of the cartridge rifle I'm looking at,
which they dated for me as made in 1998 and has a forged steel action.

Thanks for the link and if things go well, this gun will be added to my collection...pictures will be posted.
The letter was very friendly and they gave me much more interesting information...very impressive.

Then why post such garbage rumors when in fact you verified with Pedersoli it is just that - a rumor!
The model is a RO9103 (not sure if that's "zero" or an "oh" after the "R"
That's the serial number of the rifle!

As far as price on the rifle keep in mind what sights it has, Buckhorn rear and blade, pedersolis tang and globe or a high quality soule style tang and globe with level and or windage adjustment. Sights are a big expense on these rifles if you decide to upgrade them. Check Lee Shaver, MVA, Buffal Arms company and see what sights cost. Another consideration is if the trigger has been reworked and lightened as this is another expense if it needs to be done. Basic condition of the rifle also plays a big part in what the rifle is worth.

    John Boy,

I dIdn't post the rumor, I am here seeking information from those more experienced than I.
    It's an exchange of information.

Interesting link Rick, I did some searches but did not turn up this one.

Country gent,I'm still trying to hook up with the owner, but he says it has the factory tang sights and of course, the heavy barrel.
As far as the trigger, my good friend is a gunsmith and is very reasonable in cost. His work over the last 40 years has never had a complaint.

Thanks for all the info guys, can't be an expert on everything, but asking helps.

so are you getting it? sounds like a good price to me for a roller in great shape to get the feet wet. then pictures and pictures and then some photo's of both the rifle and its targets. sounds like your on the path to destruction with the rest of us.

Well, the guy travels some and has been hard to pin down, but as long as his price is reasonable, I'll get it.
    I've been kicking around for a 40-65 for a while.....too long!
