ESPC'ed firearms and parts

Anybody tried powder coating your guns or parts? If so how durable is it on the metal parts?

I thought about it for 3.75 seconds, then I realized a powder coating on any gun would have to be done in/on an area that would accept an over size of .002", an area free of "normal" gun tolerances. Powder coating is thicker than most other coatings used on firearms...

Absolutely correct.. Plus Screw holes and any Openings get smaller

I'd bet that flat black on the outside of and instead of bluing on an old, beater warhorse would look great! Any color, really. I've used flat black, barbeque grill spray paint before for the magazines. The heat generated from shooting would be a concern for me. With some self discipline to keep the heat down, I think it would be OK. ...On the outside only.

I spouse if I had a really cheap gun that was ugly and beat up. Say a battered high point I'd give it a shot.

Most of these PCs require heat curing. On some guns this would be questionable.

Powder coating works good on things such as flash hiders, sight bases and other small parts on the exterior of certain guns. It was used on one of my toys and has held up beautifully.

Companies PC lawn and patio furniture here. It holds up in the 390 days (!!) of sun we have here in the desert SW!!! It works well on motorcycle and car parts. It would work on anything where you do NOT have tolerances to worry about.

Boolits yes.........gun moving parts.......not so much!

I bought a Marlin 336 30-30 that someone had powder coated. It's a good looking gun but he had to grind some of the powder coat off in places. For example the lever where it goes up into the frame. And the stock didn't fit right either.

It is a dull silver overall but the sights, hammer,trigger, and barrel bands are bright blue. It actually looks very good. I bought it for a beater and didn't pay much for it. I am going to start with very light loads and keep an eye on the headspace. Did the heating of the metal to set the powder coat weaken the bolt lockup any? I am guessing no but I may have a parts gun or wall hanger. We'll see when I have some time.

I'm still thinking about it. I think a stainless slide could be PC'd and that it wouldn't be difficult to mask every place where it would cause a problem. The powder stores have high-temp stuff for masking.

I have had many parts PC'sd for guns in the past, like Trigger Guards, and even shotgun receivers.
You do have to do some refitting because if the extra thickness of the PC, but it wears really good.
I also use to have a friend take old beaters to where he worked and PC them for free since they werent worth the time and trouble to reblue them.
Now, they have Dura Coat and Dura Bake like products.

there is another process where you can color coat your guns and it doesn't add thickness like PC. I'll find out what it is and post.

Cerakote? Blanco does it.

Cerakote is a fantastic product for firearms.
I have been using it for several years. Discovered it when I was restoring a very weathered Savage model 99. The poor thing had huge rust gouges on one side of the receiver from riding behind a truck seat for 10 years. I stripped it down and filled the pitting with Devcon and finished it out with the air cure graphite black. From what it used to look like to now is quite the transformation. It is one of the best shooting rifles I own. And it looks great.

I once used Brownells GunKote(?) on a 1911 barrel bushing, just to see how it would hold up. It was pretty much gone after less than 1000 rounds.
