Can't believe there is nothing around the Utah area! Ogden? Anywhere? Lots of nice open country I spent years flying over there!

Well BT, how did they shoot this weekend? I thought you were taking the 50's out, or did I misread something.

Had a very good competition shoot in central Washington this weekend. I have been very busy this last three weeks (while dies where at Nitride) working on making my newly designed 820 grain 50 cal match bullets that my Dad and I shot in this match. With 240 grains of powder we where pushing these bullets right at 2700fps. Also spent a lot of time modifying the guns, prepping the brass, load development etc. etc.... Quite a lot of work when it was all done, but the results where worth it!

My Dad and I both had our own guns to shoot and both of us entered 2 classes (divisions) of the match, hunter class (shot prone off the ground with bi-pods) and heavy class (shot of a bench with a rest). Over two days, six groups of five shots are fired for both score and group size to give a total of 300 points possible. After the first day it was very close between my dad and I for both score and group size in both classes. The second day brought out a bit more challenging winds yet we still did very well, not to mention temps reaching the low 90s!

After the match was over and scores where tallied we took 1st and 2nd in the hunter class for smallest combined group sizes (aggregate) and took 1st and 3rd for total score also in hunter class, I missed 2nd place by 1 point. My dad really cleaned up in the hunter class shooting a score of 268 (nearly an average of no less then then the 9 ring for every shot!) and his group aggregate was around 1.5 MOA as I recall all off the ground!

My dad also took third in the combined two gun class where they combined all the shooters score and group size that where shooting at least two classes which every shooter there that weekend was.

In heavy class off the bench we still need a bit more practice but managed a 4th place finish in both group size and score.

Over all using my custom made bullets was a huge improvement in our results over past years using either the Hornady A-max or solid brass lathe turned bullets. A little more fine tuning of the guns, loads and bullets might even produce even better results but for now my dad and I where thrilled with the results of these bullets it looks like all that work and long hours in the shop certainly paid off. It looks like I might just be capable of making dies and match bullets able to compete with the best of them in the 50 cal market, still have a little fine tuning to go but it certainly was a rewarding feeling.

    Good shooting and swage on!

Great work, you should be very proud!

Can you make these .50 BMG bullets on the Lee press? Any status on the dies!

Very impressive, to say the least! Congratulations on all results. I have never shot in competition, but I can imagine the pressure is tremendous. Not only are the bullets "match proven", but so, too, are the shooters! VERY well done.

North Springs Range in Price, Utah is one that offers targets all the way out to 1950yrds. Probably the nicest outdoor shooting facility in all of Utah.

If you are serious into long range shooting (or even if your not) look up Long Range Shooters of Utah. (LRSU) They offer the milk jug challenge, its basically bragging rights for shooting milk jugs at 1000 yards, 1250 (I think), 1750 (I.E 1 Mile) and 2000 yards. You'll have to look them up to get the rules, but they are quite popular events and you get a vinyl sticker with the accompanying yardage for the shot, I've seen a few of them on the backs of rigs.

At some point I want to run the gambit with my .338LM and some handmade bullets and tailored loads, as well as doing some work with a M1 Garande and irons at 1000yds.

There are quite a few ranges all over Utah that you can get to 1000 yards. I do a lot of work and testing out at Price, despite living in Provo. Worth the trip.

Weight? as in bullet weights? the Alaskan could be anywhere from 250 grains to a lot????? I would have to check but certainly over 500 grains. I think I posted some pics of a 600 grain bullet for the Alaskan.

As far as wait times.... well I am sending them off to nitride tomorrow and expect them back just after the holiday.

I was hoping for a somewhat high BC boat tail bullet somewhere around 650-700 gns for a 510 Whisper. But 820 should work well and be easy to keep subsonic.
