Interesting crossection. Your jackets are a fairly consistent thickness. It would be interesting to see copper tubing jackets in section.

    50 cal die cost?

    Brian,

Have you set a price on the die set yet, if so what is the cost?

    Dang! Nice.

Btw. I finally shot a hog with the bullets you sent me, although not in the 454. I shot them out of a springfield 1911 to drop a 350lb sow.

Yes, I made these with 7/8-14 dies although I can make them with bigger dies if need be.

No I haven't set a price yet. Still takes a bit more fine tuning before ready for sales.

Got very good results on the range at 1k. I'll keep you all posted.

My 820 grain bullet on right, Hornady 750 grain A-Max on left.

Getting ready for my next 50 cal match in two weeks. I received the Multiswage press a few weeks ago from RCE LLC. and have since slowly been adapting dies and fine tuning to produce my 50 cal bullets. The hydrolic press certainly made things a lot easier but I had a lot of fine tuning of the dies to do over the designs I used last year. Took me the better part of an entire week to fine tune, adjust, learn and redo many of the necessary aspects but I got it to come together quite nicely and was able to produce a little over 600 bullets that I will be testing down range in the next few days.

I was able to improve the boat tail and VLD tip considerably reducing runout, so with a bit of luck these bullets will fly even better then last years design. This years bullets are 820 grains with a 10s ogive and a Corbin VLD tip. Jackets are from RCE.

    Good shooting and swage on!

Fair wack of boat-tail there Brian, puts the AMax to shame.

What length and angle did you go for in the end?

9 degrees and .375 diameter at the base. Think it is about .400" in length.

I wish I had the budget to send you a deposit for these dies!

I'd want to be first in line.....

    Nice work, as usual!!

Looking for a place to compete with the 50bmg

I rarely venture out of the swaging forums of this great site but I find myself in need of some of the vast knowledge of shooters on this great site. I am a member of the FCSA (Fifty Cal Shooters Association), a couple times a year I take out my two 50BMG rifles and complete against other shooters for score and group size at 1,000 yrds.

You guys have already seen my custom bullets

and the guns I shoot them from

The challenge is it is getting harder to find gun clubs that allow us to shoot these awesome calibers. What a lot of fun they are too. So far my best group is 7" at 1k with my own bullets. I am looking to break that this year. There are only a few gun ranges in the US that allow us to shoot these 50s in competition, I'm lucky to live within a three hour drive of one of these ranges.

The knowledge and information I'm looking for from you guys is any additional locations/gun clubs that might be willing to support an FCSA sanctioned shoot. We need 1,000 yrds and target area with pits that allow targets to be marked for score. Below is a rough map of the few locations that have a FCSA sanctioned shoot each year. It is marked with a 400 mile wide circle. I'm looking for some new areas in the locations outside of these circles, or heck even new locations close to them would be cool too. I'm thinking somewhere around Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Kansas City and maybe SW Texas could certainly benefit from a place to shoot and watch these awesome guns in action.

Here is a look at the "pits" that protect the scorer and allow use to score the targets quickly while the shooter is still on the clock.

and a look at the range I shoot/compete at

If you know of any gun ranges that might meet the requirements to allow such a match please feel free to let me know. If you are ever in the area of these matches I urge you to look into checking it out, ask to help in the pits, it is awesome to see the bullets strike the target and hear the crack of the bullet pass by. Ask questions from the shooters, I have known members to let others shoot their big 50s before! How cool is that!

Here is a link to the dates these matches will be held, the black circles on the map represent where they are. Certainly some of you must be in driving distance of these locations and would love to see, take part or even shoot a big 50BMG!

    http://www.fcsa.org/wwwroot/visitors/matches.php

    Thanks for the help

    Good shooting and swage on!

I have not shot at the Missoula Range, but have had several tell me it's a great 1000yard range. Might be an option for the listing you are creating. Following web site speaks to "Bench Rest", but I do not know how the butts are configured/operated. Here is their web site:

Just looking at it again is that a true conical boat-tail (straight taper), or is the image just giving it a slight radiused appearance. I can certainly understand why you would use a radius.

0.400" of length is pretty much where you want to be at with the 510 cal. The good thing is that +/-0.010" in boat-length won't have a big impact like it does on the small-bore calibres.

What do the theoretical dimensions spit out when using the Litz's G7 form factor estimator?

The bullets in post #32 are last years version, they had a bit of a rebated boat tail to it. This years model is better and both are made to have straight taper with no radius.

I have all Litz's books but haven't had the time to look into it enough to find out how to calculate the G7. I did some rough calculations using JBM site and as I recall it put the G1 between .990 and 1.05 depending on FPS which was really close to the A-Max and maybe a little better as I ran the numbers for the A-Maxx too. I'm not too concerned with the BC numbers, I'll dial up as much as need be, so long as they are accurate.

I have shot silhouette at Missoula's range. It is not uncommon to have very light wind conditions there. The place is so good it is difficult to find a weekend with no conflicting events.

I figured with the trees and valley protection the light winds would be great for shooting. It looked so good I called the VP today. He said they would be open to the idea of a 50 cal shoot there. Yes I saw the schedule is pretty booked. Talking to the VP he mentioned a number of record groups have been shot there, no doubt with the light wind I suppose.

Thanks for mentioning the range guys. It might just happen!

Keep the ideas for locations coming.
