    I got a mosin

Well went to the range today, was workin new handloads for my .30-30, and the wife was shootin her shotgun. well the wife asked to get rifle type sights similar to my Ithica 37, i said ok and since we were 1/4 mi from my gunsmith buddy we wandered over to see what he had to say. well one thing led to another and we got on the subject of mosins, I said i wanted one and he said he had several the needed to be assembled. so for 75 bucks i got a box of mosin, hex reciver and matching #s on the bolt and receiver, rifling is solid, no pits rust or frost(needs good cleanin, still in cosmoline). the bad, its counter bored and the barrel is pitted a bit where the upper handguard was and the stock is missing said guard and well the wood shows its age, to me this will be a good sporter project. but now i need a mossberg 500 20ga slug barrel for the wife to get out of ze dog haus.

Make sure you slug the bore. Both of mine are around .314". Parts are abundant and relatively cheap. I removed the rear sight base on one and installed a pistol scope in 22 rings, rock solid.
Have fun with your new project.

Well neither of mine is counterbored, but it makes little difference. Minute of 5 gallon bucket is about it at 50 yards, have not tried farther, I'd need a BIG piece of plywood.

Next step for me is a custom push through sizer in .313 instead of .311.

Try the bullets as cast--my finn m39 has a 313 groove and shoots the 314299 very good--1.5 MOA at 100.

well here is a pic or 2, it has surface pitting on the barrel but bore is squeaky clean now, its all cleaned up, stock is rough, gonna get a boyds, date on barrel says 1907, and the interesting bit is all the trigger parts appear to be stainless, what i wonder is if i can fill and smooth the pits w/ solder, oh and i may knock the barrel down from 31.5 in to about 28, we will see how it fits with the new stockClick image for larger version.

    Not stainless, just steel in-the-white.

Well curiosity got the better of me so i put it all together, and i hate to say it, it doesn't look like any 91/30 i have ever seen, and it has a 1 piece interrupter, and i still think the trigger, sear and interrupter are stainless(no rust on any of those parts and hardly any cosmoline), sling is different and it never had an upper hand guard, going to go to shoot it tomorrow and see what it does, oh and it has a smooth trigger pull Click image for larger version.

That is no m91/30. That gun there is an original m1891 infantry rifle. And if it still has the one peice interupter that means she didnt get modified when russia adopted the 91/30. I think i saw one of those last week for 400$ at a pawn shop. Keep her as is, she aint no $150 commie rifle.

Does this rifle have an "SA" in a square box on the receiver or barrel? I believe that the sling swivels are the type that the Finn's used. You might want to check closely, It may be a Finn capture.
