    What did I find??

I passed thru a pawn shop today and found a .25 Cal. older Ruger (3 screw) Single Six. The 22 cal stamp on the frame had been "runnin' ironed" out to read .25. Cylinder had definitely been re-bored and seemed to fit a .22 Hornet case as far as head and rim diameter but obviously the Single-Six cyl. is not long enough for the Hornet case. Actually it is I guess as the case reached right even with the chamber mouths but the bullet stuck out. Anyone know what this might be?? I will get to my reloading room and check the Ackley books I guess. It does seem to be some kind of wildcat based on the 22 Hornet case and trimmed short enough to work in the Single Six. I really got the shop owner confused because he told me it was re-chambered for 25-20 and I told him that was impossible and then proved it to him as I had a 32-20 in my pocket. Anyway, I may or may not be interested in this thing, but I prefer not to purchase until I know what it is. Any help is appreciated and I thank you all in advance. JW

Wouldn't it have to be a rimfire of some sort?

Sometimes people have custom guns built. It sounds like you have a custom Single-Six that has been converted to a centerfire caliber etc.
I'd look very closely to see if you can find any tiny special marks.

You should buy it. Wish I was there, I might buy it myself.
Youve most likely found a .25 Hornet

    heres an article.

The proper answer is "you have found the reason Cerrosafe exist".
My answer you be you have found a new challenge that sounds like a lot of fun. I would buy it if the price were right.

Right, my only concern would be dies of $ome $ort. Gotta get a better guess of the cartridge and look up prices on dies for cobbling together ammo. Be wary of the unknown.
Happiness is a couple of 38's and a bucket of ammo.

Is it still rimfire or has it been converted to centerfire? It may be some version of the .25 Stevens in either rim or centerfire configuration.

There is a pretty long thread in the rimfire section about the .25 RF, and ways to load it.

Thanks for the info guys. Not sure if center fir or rimfire at this point, I will check. The price is quite attractive, as is the little gun. JW

Very interesting article Dean and I appreciate it. Can't be it though as this is a Single-Six, not Blackhawk. BH has longer frame window and cyl. and this one has not been "stretched" in that dept. I do think it is probably a shorter version of the .25 Hornet though. Got to look at the gun again and see if it is rim or center fire, and then go from there. My Ackley books have gone into hiding somewhere (most likely right where I put them). I got too much other stuff going on right now so this is on hold for a bit. JW

The thing has been converted to center fire. So it is something based on 22 Hornet case, shortened, and opened up to .25 cal. I shoulda just bought it because now they have pulled it off the shelf and are doing more research and say they anticipate a higher price. Just the sights on this little gun are cool, plus the "conversion". JW

Unless they provide dies for the anticipated higher price, it probably won't be worth messing with.

Dies for one of wildcats tend to be $pendy. If it turns out to be something CH4D makes inexpensively....

Even Dave's custom made dies (CH4D) aren't terribly spendy.

Rare is not always good. If truly odd it's not very desirable due to ammo issues so the price should come down not up.

Just tell them there is no way to get ammo for it and make a low ball offer. What we know they don't have to know.
