    Thumbs up Mosin-Nagant Modifications

After installing a Huber Roller Ball trigger on my Mosnin-Nagant, I still couldn't shoot it well because I couldn't see the sights. I just installed a Mojo Sighting Systems Aperature sight on it and the sight picture is incredible.

Intallation was a bear. The leaf spring under the sight felt like it took about 60# of pressure to hold it down. Four hands, a 3/32" Pin Punch, a 1/2" square block of wood, a calmp and a plastic mallet were the tools needed.

I didn't want to change anything on the rifle but I want to be able to shoot it well.Click image for larger version.

Nice changes that should make it a lot more "shootable"..

You probably have more invested in the trigger and sight that you paid for the rifle! Ain't it fun being a milsurp fanatic!! Been there, done it.

I like that peep sight. I like this idea better than a scope, etc. They are just a little pricy, but cheaper than scope mount and scope.

I hope you are not talking about shimming the sear spring. I know a lot of people do it, but don't.

That sight is sweet, how do like it? Did your groups tighten up? I have been looking for a sight like that that , looks like we have a winner - Smith sight up front and a Mojo peep out back.

That is the exact combination I have. A Smith front sight and the Mojo rear. I just got it put on Friday night and haven't had a chance to take it out. and fire it. It may be a week or two before I get there.

Nice part is, I can put all the original parts back on easily. Several months ago I saw a scope mount made for the M/N that was designed to fit in the M/N sight slot. Because it puts the mount so far forward it had to be used with a Scout scope. It looked solid enough but I have other guns I can use for deer in Indiana: 12 ga. 870 , 50 Cal. Traditions, H&R Handi-rifle, 44 Remington Magnum, and a 35 Remington short.

I removed the sight Base from my MN and used rings for the grooved 22lr receivers to mount a cheap NcStar 2 X 7 pistol scope on it. There is a steel base attached to the barrel that has a reverse taper so it is bigger on top and the 22 rings clamp on solid.
I also used JB Weld to bed the action and relieved the wood around the barrel to float it. Made it shoot good.
The mojo sights look like a good deal also. The Arisaka type 99 has a peep about in the same spot on the barrel an it works well so this should also.

It does not seem right to spent more money on aftermarket parts for a MN but they do shoot good.

I don't understand what shims are gonna do that pilar-bedding won't. If it's supposed to save money, I paid all of $10 for a pair for my 91/30 (don't recall where.)

Plus not having to re-do the bolt handle!

Over and over I see where guys that have bought the NcStar 2-7 LER scope have been very happy with it. I bought a couple on the advice of Madsenshooter and have been very pleased with the performance. When a fellow like Dutchman thinks highly of it,,,,

I note that some folks are assuming that all MN's have the dovetailed rear sight, which is not the case, you will have to do a little checking.

A 91/30 is too long and heavy for me so I got a type 53 [got a deal on a synth stock for it], much more manageable, bigger fireball too!

Shims are much easier to install than pillar bedding, and for the amount of height needed (generally around .020 to .040, just to take up compression in the wood from having the action screws tight for 70 years), there's no need for anything more. If you prefer pillar bedding, go for it -- but for those trying to keep their rifles as original as possible and/or make only reversible changes, shims will come closer to those goals (and it's not at all uncommon to find these rifles in the import cosmoline with shims already in place).

The only non-reversible change I've made to my 91/30 was to scrape the barrel channel in the forearm to float the barrel with about an inch of support at the forearm tip -- and with the action shimmed and that barrel float, and a Smith Sights front sight (reversibly) replacing the original front post and globe, I'm good for about 2 MoA over the iron sights, from a rest -- right at the limit set by my vision (a 2" aiming difference at 100 yards is pretty small in my eyes; the rifle might well be doing better than that if I could sight better).

My sporter/hunter m44 got a Mojo sight and actually started shooting well. It grouped good before ,it was just 18 inches to the left at 50 yards. Now I can shoot poa to poi and hit what I aim at, minute of coke can at 100 yards is the goal.
AR15 goes bang, AK47 goes bang, Mosin goes boom...
