7mm/08 & RCBS 7/168

Does any body have any reloading experience with this combination. I found info in my Lyman manual and tried 22gr. of 4198 and 4227. The "grouping" was terrible at 100yds and even worse at 200yds. I am loading a Mauser action with a new Douglas barrel, this rifle will shoot.
My only load so far was with the RCBS 7/145 and the 200yd groups were running about 3-4 inches. Unless I picked up any kind of a crosswind,
and thats when that 145 grainer really gave me fits. I borrowed the 7/168 hoping that a heavier bullet might negate the damage done by cross winds the bullet was cast 3-1 ww to lino.

your rifle has something like a 1-9.5 twist rate, try slowing it down.
all my 7's shot both the 145 and the 168 much better at about 1800-1850 fps.
24-25 grs of 4895 airc and 15-16 grs of 2400 both done well
your 4227 would be more in line with @17 grs of 4227 and about the same of the 4198 to start with, a Dacron filler would help the 4198/4895 too.

neither of these designs are built for velocity work, they also do much better if you work on engraving the nose on chambering.
I fiddle my alloy until I get the proper nose fit [sometimes this takes 2-3 attempts of casting and trying] then go with it.
water dropping the alloy doesn't hurt either.

I tried the rcbs 145sil boolet And the throat was to short to use it in my GS rem#7 , perhaps i could size down the bore riding nose section a few thousands , but i would have to get a special die made ? as this boolet will also not fit the throat of my 7 mag or my 7mm IHSMA but it did fit the contender 7mm TCU with there free bore. accuracy was poor with any of the 4 cast boolets i tried in the 7mm TCU.

the 168 boolit did well with 10 gr unique in my sons 7-08, a 150 gr boolit did well with aa4350 at 30gr, lee soupcan does well with trail boss at 8 to 10 gr. Gun favores the soupcan over the heavier boolits. I have a bunch more load info but can't find it.

buckshot can make you a nose size die for the in out type sizers.

I have seen many have issues with nose diameter recently, I'm wondering if the mold has changed slightly or if the barrels are getting tighter in the throat area.
the rifling just starting without any kind of throat taper is something I am seeing in pistols too.
looks like a manufacturing short cut [shrug]

Found some loads for the RCBS 145gr gc SIL boolet for 7/08

H4227---- 22.0 gr----1,907 fps

Unique----12.0 gr----1,480 fps

H-4895---28.0 gr----1,624 fps

H-335----28.0 gr----1,877 fps

all loads shot 1.5 " or better at 100 yards with a 4X scope, velocity from a 18.5 " barrel.

I've had pretty good results with 4895/4064 and the Lyman 287641 (160 grains). Somewhere in the 1600-1850 fps should suite you well for a 1:9.5" twist barrel. Start with minimum published loads (Lyman 47th). Works in the 7x57 too.

Thanks again for all the suggestions I got from my posting. I made a trip back to the range using some of these loads suggested here, this was a quick and dirty test run. 5 different loads 10 rounds each started a 100 yds.
10 grs. Unique and 17 grs. of 4198 were clears winners, shot group were approx. 1 1/8"
25 grs of 4895, 5 shots came out at 1 3/8"
30 grs. of 4350 5 shots measured 1 1/2"
17 grs. of 4227 5 shot measure 2 1/8"

That session accounted for approx. 25 rds. so I proceeded out to 200 yds.
Used up most of my 4198 loads at 100 yds. so did not try what was left at 200, most of the group were at 4+ inches with the Unique load showing signs of tipping.
I will do more 200 yd. testing with more rounds loaded up will concentrated on the Unique by adding 2 grains, the 4198, and the 4895 and 4350 by adding a cotton batting on top of the powder and going with a mag. primer. Will post back when I acquire more results.

Try painting the part of the nose you want reduced with the Hi-Temp Bar-B-Q paint. Just spray some of the paint into a paper cup, ect. and apply in very light amounts to avoid the paint from running. I picked this up from a post by a member that was having the same problem with a heavy 30 . 15-17 gn of 2400 work for all my 7 molds in my 700V 7-08
