    45/70 - thanks guys

after getting mediocre results with Ruger #1 and cores sizes @ .451" I decided to try something bigger. I dug out my Lee .451" push through and opened it up to .453". I patched a 457193 up to .464" and seated it on 51 grs of aa4064 and a tuft of dacron. First two shots were 8 inches low at 100 yds and almost touching. Adjusted the scope and the next two hit an inch low and about an inch apart. one more adjustment put me an inch high and, again, put two shots about an inch apart. I had four shots left and sent them out to 200 yds. and a nice round 3 inch group was the result (14 inches low)

I dug these out of the 200 yd berm. I was a little surprised at the condition of the base of the boolits. The patch was just barely folded under (Hyde style?). I am more than happy with results and have many here to thank. THANKS!!!!

    Darrell

Oh yea, almost forgot. Avg velocity was 1625 fps.

    WTG!

I have not recovered any bullets yet but I'm very happy with cast in both my Mosin's and the old Yugo SKS girl.
That SKS in particular surprised me, why is all the ammo for SKS 123-4 gr when she shoots 185 (Actual closer to 195 with GC and lube) so dang well?

With the small case, and a slower powder (4865) recoil is not an issue at all. The 185 gr bullets set just a touch long (maybe 1/8th inch below the crimp groove) works in the mag's fine and seems to do a better job of filling that big communist throat. (Its ok big girl, no shame in knowing what you like) At 50 they shoot exactly where pointed. I was hitting things like shards of clay pidgen exactly where I wanted.

I have not tried longer, probably would have to adjust sights a touch. Maybe next time.

Just finished putting together a 8" gong (Yes I used AR 500 steel) on steel angle iron frame (Old bedframe)
So maybe we'll walk it out to the 100 yard mark and see what the old girls have. I know what I don't have, the eyesight I enjoyed in my youth.
Don't know if I'll be able to see that gong or not.

Spray paint the gong and have at it! Thanks for your report. I'm going to attempt to follow in your foot steps.

I tried a different boolit this morning with interesting results.

Lyman 457122 hp around 10bhn aircooled again patched up to .464" on top of 55 gr aa4064 and 3031. The 4064 gave 1821 fps avg with a sd of 14.28 and the 3031 was 2045 and 26.75.

This pic wws the 3031 @ 100 yds, the 4064 was almost identical.

Just under 2". Interesting thing was at 200 yds I could barely hit paper. Too fast? Too soft? I am open to ideas. Thanks all.

Tried a couple different powders and loads this morning and still happy with the results.

Both of these are 50 gr. 3031 with the 457193 @ .464" at 100 yds.

ID:	112732 The lower 5 were the the first five of the day and I wasn't holding real tight. The second five were much better.

It's fun when boolits go where you want them to. Thanks again.

I use a Lee 405 gr hollow base mold, run thru a .452" sizer, with some liquid alox, then patch with 8 oz onionskin. After drying, I rub with liquid alox for waterproofing, and brush on moly powder, so the paper doesn't stick in the case mouth. When testing with no moly, I found shots outside the group left bits of paper in the case. These feed nicely in my Marlin--if fed into the magazine carefully, no paper gets scraped off on the ogive. This load will destroy a deer shoulder into hamburger and bone meal, BTW. 53 gr R7, or 3031, get about 1850 fps, and knocks my hat off from the bench. About 1 1/2" for 3 shots at 100 with a K2.5 scope. About 20:1 soft alloy, and bevel the base for easy seating.

Well, I am not sure a 130 lb. fork horn is the best test bed for this rifle but the results can't be argued with.

The results were impressive to say the least. The shot was all of about 40 yds. He staggered about 10 feet and kind of tipped over. Entrance and exit were forward of the diaphragm and the shock burst his full stomach and actually blew a couple of holes between his ribs high up on the far side. Both shoulders survived without any blood shot meat.

Gentlemen, I would like to give a big thank you for helping me to get a load that I am 100% confident with that will shoot sub-moa out to 200 yds.

    52 gr. 3031, dacron wad and patched 457193 @ .464"

    THANK YOU!!!!!!!

Don't you just love it when a plan comes together?

Entrance and exit were forward of the diaphragm and the shock burst his full stomach and actually blew a couple of holes between his ribs high up on the far side.
    And he still staggered!

    I still works

I loaded 20 rds last year and still have 18 left.

Without paper patch this rifle would likely spend all its time in the safe.

    Thanks again.
