    Savage 99 in 358 Winchester

This rifle was done for Dragon831gt.
It is completely done by hand.
The metal was drawfiled by hand and then polished with a wooden block and sandpaper, and then blued in my tanks.
The wood was inletted to the metal and scraped into perfect fit and seamless continuity, and then over 20 coats of true oil were rubbed into the wood by hand, and finally the checkering was deepened and pointed up one line at a time.

This rifle was sent to JES reboring where the rifling was cut into the new bore by hand.
The lever was polished out by hand and then sent to Turnbull for color case hardening.

The sights are made by Skinner and were filed to fit the doves perfectly.

All this comes together to create a booliteers dream come true. This is now an heirloom quality rifle and I would wager that Dragon813gt does not recognize it for the plain rifle that he sent here months ago.

Thanks to Dragon813gt for allowing me to help make this rifle a reality.

Thanks Tim, the rifle looks outstanding. My five week old son will come to appreciate this rifle in a few years

So people can see here is what it looked like to begin w/.

Hopefully the comb is the right height for the irons. Once I get this figured out I will ship out my 99 in 300 Savage for you to work your magic on. I can't say enough about how great the rifle looks.

    Sandpaper and love my man.
This one was a phoenix if I ever saw one. The pictures don't quite do it justice. Just wait till you get you see it! I've turned it over and over in bright sunlight, and I am pleased with the quality and I can't find any excuse to go back into it.
I am very pleased with this build.

    You'll have to ask dragon813gt.
He sent me the stocks, I stripped them down to bare wood and finished them so that I got maximum OMGosh from the wood grain, as well as line to line fit with the metal.
God bless the stockmakers that leave extra wood for me to carve off!

I have a 99E in .308 that looks just like the before pics. It's a good shooter and I like it as is. I picked up a Savage 99 Brush Gun in .358 I've been working with and am becoming convinced that cartridge in the 99 platform is the ultimate deer rifle.

Beautiful work as always, Tim. You are truly a master craftsman.

I really like the way the pics are composed. The barn boards, the blue lantern, the handful of cartridges. You make me want to go shoot! The rifle is a joy to behold. I can imagine the smiles when that gets uncased.

I've shot it. It's a sweet ride. A real sweet ride.
I hated to send it back. LOL!

It's new old stock. If you're on the ball they pop up every now and then. I have another one that's going to go on the 300 Savage. I've been contemplating how many I should buy now because they are only going to be harder to find in the future. And they aren't cheap now.

Excellent! Did you wet sand with the oil to fill the grain? Wax?

    No.
I dry sanded between coats, and just kept going till I got what I wanted. I followed a process for applying the finish I learned from a guitar maker who preferred Truoil to polyurethane when using dark tonewoods. It produces a finish that can't be matched IMHO. It took a couple weeks, but it's no big deal. Just put on a fresh coat and the beginning and end of each day.
