    2400

Over the past few years I have been doing what I am sure many of you have been doing and that is making working combinations of powder and bullets that you already have on hand.

I am down to a 4# keg of 2400 and a bunch of 30 cal 110 grain soft point Norma bullets I picked up for almost nothing at a garage sale. I want a 30/06 plinker load.

I was a little surprised because I emailed Alliant asking to suggest a load. They said no data exists because 2400 is a pistol powder and the 30/06 is a rifle powder.

I guess I am not smart enough to stop with that. So can anybody offer any advice? thanks

I cannot help you with the Norma bullets, but 2400 is great for use in the 30-06 with cast bullets. See this article:

Lyman 3rd edition shows a starting charge of 18 grains of 2400 for a velocity of 1,685 fps in the '06 with a 122 grain cast bullet, and pressure of 12,400 cup. They show a top charge of 32 grains with the same bullet and a velocity of 2,617 and pressure of 37,600 cup. My oldest son killed his first few deer with 25 grains of 2400 with a 150 grain Remington round nosed bullet in his Remington model Seven in 308 Winchester. This was published data in the Hercules giveaway data pamplet at the time, but I can't put my hands on it at the moment. The Lyman Ideal Handbook #38 can be found on Castpics.net and shows data for jacketed bullets both lighter and heavier than your 110 grains. I'll let you look at that for yourself and reach your own conclusions as well as to avoid any typo's. I think 2400 would work in your application for a good plinking load, but I won't make any specific recommendations as to charge weights ranges.
    Good Luck,
    Rick

In my Winchester Model 54 .30-'06 a charge of 21.8 grs. of Alliant #2400, metered with my RCBS Little Dandy powder measure, using the rotor #26, with Winchester 150-grain Power-Point .30-30 bullets, in FA49 cases with Winchester WLR primers gave 1873 fps with a Standard Deviation of 18 fps and an Extreme Spread of 49 fps over a ten-shot string.

I have used this same charge with Remington 110-grain softpoint .30 caliber carbine bullets in the '06, and while I never chronographed them, the load shot well. I expect their velocity was close to what you would expect with a full-charge load in the M1 carbine, based on the bullet performance on varmints.

16 grains of 2400 works in almost any 'normal' sized rifle cartridge.

    Results!
It took awhile but I worked up some plinkers.
    Federal brass
    Win LR primer
    110 gr Norma round nose
    22 gr 2400
I cut 1.5 inch groups at 50 yards but always 3 shots touching and 2 flyers.
Hit to point of aim with normal site hold on my 1903.
Great fun and my AR loving son enjoyed it also!
    Then...
I acquired some old Herters 120 large rifle primers. Subbing them in for Win LR's cut my groups to 1 inch. I thought it a fluke but two trips to the range and two tests had the same results.

I second the 16gn of 2400 in a normal rifle case with normal weight boolits. It just works.

I believe the OP has some 110 grain 30 carbine jacketed bullets. They should work great in the 06 loaded with 2400 to 30 Carbine velocity. If you want to go that fast. You may be there with 22 grains. No point in running faster than what it takes to get the job done.

LOL, I guess that Alliant thinks I shouldn't be using their Red Dot or Blue Dot in my .308Win 110gr FMJ plinker loads either.
Alliant makes the all-time greatest rifle "pistol powders" IMO.

I wish someone would have told me not to use up my 8# jug of 2400 powder in my rifle cast boolit shooting. I only have one more pound of that 8# jug remaining. I burned up those 7#'s in my 30-30's, .32 Win Specials, .35 Remingtons, .357 Magnum rifles and handguns, 44 Magnum handgun and rifle, .308 Winchesters, .300 Savages, and 30-06's, all with my own cast bullets. Two powders I won't be without are 2400 and RL-12 (now discontinued). When Alliant announced the discontinuance of RL-12 I purchased 19 pounds of it all in Lot 012, and still have around 15 pounds of it. I load RL-12 in all my centerfire rifle cartridges from my .350 Rem Mag down to my 6mm Rem.

I wonder if that is lawyerspeak coming from Alliant, or they really have folks with so little knowledge.

Lee Modern Reloading lists .30-06 loads using 2400, too. Examples:

    110 grain jacketed 30.9 gr. 2715 fps 55900 psi

    125 " " 30 gr. 2575 fps 55100

    150 " " 29.4 gr. 2330 fps 56000

    165 " " 29.2 gr. 2295 fps 55400

    180 " " 28.2 gr. 2210 fps 55400

Nothing listed for 200 and 220 grain loads with 2400, but they do list some with 4227.

IIRC 2400 is a standard powder for .30 Carbine.
