    guide gun loads

    I have been casting lyman 330 hp and and lee 405 gr bullets. Then I've been paperpatching them was wondering about loads... I have 3031, 4064, 7828, varget, IMR 4895, RE7, win 780 and 760, h4831, and a few others I can't remember. I was wondering about 7828, are there any compressed loads, for that powder, as well as any of the others?? I want compressed loads as I"m shooting them out of a tube mag...
    I used 55 gr of varget under the 405s, but it was cracking the lever. I'd like a bit less. Thinking of 4064 or 7828...
    Under the 330s, I'm using 55gr of 3031.

    7828 will be very slow, just stuff as much of it in the case as will fit.

    4064 will work a lot better. Use book loads for that.

    I"m liking IMR4064. A case full of it isn't cracking the lever open when fired. Although cracking the lever might make for faster cycling...

    if you have never had the fun of foolin with trail boss powder in a 45-70 or any other case then it is hard to tell ya how fluffy and filling with just a few grains. it is very filling with just a small weighed amount.

    however;

    trail boss is NOT the powder to compress under a boolit. the maker specifically states to NOT compress the powder.

    i also would be in the IMR 4064 camp for the full case load of 100% loading. maybe H4831 but i have no experience with that powder.

    Yeah, 17gr. of Trail Boss fills a 45-70 to the base of the bullet using the RCBS 45-325-FN-U. Shoots pretty good in my 1895CB, goes about 1200 fps.

    4064 sure works a lot better if you actually want power though!

    H4831 is a fair bit slower. The Lee book suggests using the same load volume in all cases, and use a faster or slower powder to adjust the speed...

    so you are still talking about a full 100% load then in volumn and then using the same volumn of another type powder to go faster or slower?

    if so ... seems strange as i hadnt thought along those terms with smokeless powder before.

    That is what I meant. Using the same load volume or duplex load to increase, and slower powders to decrease speed. Seems to produce more consistent results.
