how clean should a lee 6-cav be?

I have yet to cast a bullet, but plan to start this weekend. I have two sets of 6-cav 45acp molds that I bought used from a castboolit member, and they are pretty dirty.

Should I clean off all of the black, sooty stuff? In a few sections I have scrubbed off and found the shiny aluminum behind. The black stuff kinda 'flakes' off in pieces when I scrub with water/toothbrush.

    Thanks!

the black stuff is probly smoke from a lighter or match or its mould "drop-out".........either way take a Q-tip and acetone and wipe the cavs clean.

Lee want's their molds well smoked before you use them. I have always
done this, wouldn't remove it if they are already smoked.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.
