    CSB1 powder?

Anyone have any data on this powder? A friend has run across a possible source and was looking for any info. Apparently it is one of the powders used by Rio in the making of shotshells, so should be applicable to what we do, which is Cowboy shooting. Mainly 38's with 125gr lead fp. Thanks for any leads.

Looks like a pretty standard 12 ga flake. I'd treat it as reddot and work loads up as if it were fast until chronograph results show the actual burn rate. Use 38s in a 357 revolver to test as that gives a wide margin of safety. Also weigh charges as large flakes may bridge in a measure.

Had some workups this weekend for 9mm in a Glock 34 with both Lone Wolf and KKM Barrels. Also some 38 Super data from a revolver..

Lone Wolf bbl - 4.1 gr - 125 gr Bear creek - Win SPP - Mixed brass yielded avg 1073 ES 44 and SD of 15.
Lone Wolf bbl - 4.3 gr - 125 gr Bear creek - Win SPP - Mixed brass yielded avg 1101 ES 35 and SD of 11.
Lone Wolf bbl - 4.5 gr - 125 gr Bear creek - Win SPP - Mixed brass yielded avg 1129 ES 27 and SD of 8.

Lone Wolf bbl - 3.24 gr - 147 gr Bear creek - Win SPP - Mixed brass yielded avg 881 ES 15 and SD of 6.
KKM bbl - 3.24 gr - 147 gr Bear creek - Win SPP - Mixed brass yielded avg 866 ES 50 and SD of 18.

    627 in 38 super with 5.5" ported barrel - Starline brass - Federal SPP - 130 LRN - 4.4 gr yielded 1100 fps ES of 56 SD of 13.

None of these loads showed any pressure signs. Haven't had time to load any 38 spl, 40, or other calibers yet.

That's weird that you have metering issues.. I use it in a Dillon powder measure and find it to measure consistently.

i was using a rcbs uniflow. Now i am using a lee dipper and loading 4.2 gr. with a bullet cast from mp 359-125 mold. I am shooting them in a ruger lc9. I do not know the fps but it is an accurate load in the two lc9s we have.

I hope to do some further testing in the following calibers..

    38 spl
    357 magnum
    41 magnum (likely light loads)
    38 super (other bullet weights)
    9mm (110 gr bullet)
    40 S&W (various bullet weights)
12 and 20 gauge shotshells at some point..

I tested some side by side with Universal in .45 colt. These are RUGER ONLY loads out of a 7.5" OM BH

    NOE 454424 255 GR.

    8.0 unv Avg vel 953 ES 52 SD 20
    8.0 csb-1 avg vel 991 ES 33 SD 14

    9.0 unv vel. 1066 ES 19 SD 7
    9.0 csb-1 vel.1068 ES 12 SD 4

    10.0 unv vel. 1149 ES 31 SD 13
    10.0 csb-1 vel. 1142 ES 27 SD 10

Meters very well thru both my uni flo and the lnl powder measures. Also fills the case a little more than universal.

I have 16 pounds of it and have used the Universal data on it with no problems at all, if you are not that confident with it, then use the Universal load data less 10% on your starting load.

    Here's my meager contribution:

CSB-1 (no lot #, from Hi-tech), 200 grain RCBS 45 SWC. 45 ACP Loads from Ruger Flattop BH (4 5/8"): 5.3 grains/868 fps, 6.0/960, 6.3/1036. Mixed brass and CCI LP primers.

I had no signs of excess pressure. I showed a little higher velocity than Hodgdon has for Universal. It metered fine through my Uniflow.

I sort of think it's all from the same lot.. when I talked to the gent at Hi-Tech, he said that he had a large amount of CSB-1.

Not likely unless one of your local guys picked up a few cans of it.. If you were in the Bay area or know someone who might be I could probably measure off a # to get to you.

I have 10 pounds of CSB-1 from High Tech.

    I have tried it in.
    38 special
    9mm
    .380
so far, results are very good. Seems to meter just fine from my Hornady meter on the LNL AP.
Shooting cast powder coated and Copper plated so far.
Using Universal data at the start load and working up to what I like.

I received a shipment a week ago and they had a data sheet in the case.. they listed loads for 9mm, 40 S&W, 45 acp, 357 magnum, and 44 magnum. Didn't give velocity ddata, just charge weight starting and max load.

I'm working up 40 cal 180 and 200 gr bullets this week.. Hope to have some data in the next week.

I worked up data yesterday in 40 S&W and found that with a 180 gr bullet, it was safe in my Para to go up to 5.5 gr with a 180 gr bullet. I was getting an avg velocity of 1010 fps. I went as low as 3.7 gr with a 180 and was getting an avg of 784 fps.

I also worked up data from 3.7-4.7 gr @ 1.151" with a 200 gr Bullet. My avg @ 3.7 was 768 fps and with 4.7 it was 894 fps.

I used Winchester SPP's and Winchester brass. Powder obviously CSB-1

There seems to be another vendor selling powder called ETR7 by "Expansion Industries". I did a direct compare of the data I got from Hi-tech ammo and it was pretty much the same as this ETR7 that they are claiming is similar to 231/Tightgroup. I have not purchased any of that other powder, mostly because they are offering 4# for $100.. or $25/lb without shipping/hazmat. In case lots I've been told bu hi-tech ammo that the CSB-1 will ship for $663 for 30#.. which translates to $22.10/lb. Just putting this out there at the moment.

I sent the gent selling it a message but have not heard anything back from them about it.. makes me go.. hmmm...
