    Ruger American 7-08 range time

Went to the range today, needed to empty some factory ammo.

Shot my new Ruger American in 7-08 with PPU 140gr spitzer soft point.

Once zeroed, I was quickly awed!

7 shots at 100yds 5 were stacked ontop of each other, all touching in a tight cluster and the two odd ones were 1/2 out either side.

Did this a couple of times.

    I'm a happy camper!

With 40 rnds now gone I don't think I need to break it in anymore.

I have some brass that is currently in the tumbler and plan on some load development. Not sure if I'll try some of my j-words first or some cast.

Ditto to that! Or in any other Ruger for that matter.

A .260 compact would quickly be added to my American collection.

Sounds like a good rifle. Congratulations. I've had my eye on that one for a while.

Wow that's good shooting.Love the 7/08. About 7 years ago i had a rem. model 7 stainless with 20" bbl. that was a shooter too. That rifle doted on h414 and sierra bullets. It would shoot the 175 gr. gamekings like they were match bullets. Sounds like you've got a keeper there for sure.....nice!

I bought a Ruger American Compact in 223 yesterday, lookout rabbits, hares, foxes, crows, goats and pigs. I have a 2-7 Vari X11 Leupold sitting around somewhere, they will be a great team as a walkabout rifle.

I bought almost the same as Mick a couple weeks ago except mine is the stainless compact 223 with a 2-7 prostaff on it. So far it has done in a couple groundhogs. Now just to find the time to reload for it, I am getting by for the time being with factory vmax loads.

What sort of groups are you getting cattleskinner? Neat little rifle though, I saw it on the shelf, asked for a look, threw it to the shoulder and then pulled my wallet out.

I have had a Sako Hunter until recently, which was my go-to rifle for many years. I got it re-barrelled and the smith forgot everything I told him and fitted a No3 profile barrel on it and hogged out the barrel channel big time to fit it in. The rifle went from a wand to a muzzle heavy rifle. It was extremely accurate, but the balance (and the stock) was ruined. I never really got interested in it again and ended up selling it off. Hopefully this rifle will fill the gap (also $AU570 as against $AU2490 for a new Sako).

I have high hopes for it.

7mm-08 is a GREAT cartridge ! (in my not so humble opinion) I'm glad Ruger found a way to make a good inexpensive rifle for that round.

Woah 6.5 Creedmore and a 22" barrel! That may be something!

I haven't got a chance to really try it for groups, but at 50 yds is was about 1/2 to 3/4 inch off a rolled up blanket. Same type of rest at 100 yds was putting them at about 1 1/4 inches. I have a four day weekend starting tomorrow, so as long as it doesn't continue to rain, I will try and test it out some more and let you know.

I wish they made one in 6.5x55, but that is basically a 260 rem. 257 Roberts would be nice as well. I wonder if they can be rebarreled!

finally got around to loading some for it and shooting it.
154gr Hornady spire pts at 100 yds.

the other test charges for that load were 39gr, 40, and 41gr.
ALL were very respectable! Hovering around the 1.5" mark

this one just was a tad smaller.

My Ruger American 7-08 took around 200+ rounds of jacketed before it truly settled in. It was very accurate from the start, but I would always get 1 or 2 flyers that would ruin a 1/2 to 3/4 inch group. Not far out, but enough to make them 1 to 1 1/4 inches. It didn't take long to settle in on Alliant Reloder 17 powder along with a Nosler 140 gr BT. I used CCI 200's throughout developement. A final tweak at the end was a switch to Federal 210M match primers. It will now consistently shoot 5/8 to 3/4", 5-shot groups on demand.I aso have an American in 243 and 308. Both took about the same round count to break in. The 308 may have been a tad easier. If I were to get another one, I would seriously consider using about 20 firelapping rounds to get things smoothed up quicker.

took it to the range today, and set up at 200yds with the above load on post #16

I shot an 8 shot group that was 2" wide and 3" tall. I am really pleased!

Excellent Blammer ! ... this is defiantly a Ruger American thread ....
Just a beginner with the .308 that I picked up last year ...
Have been working up loads with 4064 and the lyman 311332 at fifty yards ,plus getting the scope centered.
As usual I am all over the paper but the last time out with about 27.5 gr's. ... it all came together ..
But a question here to every one ....should I be putting factory rounds thru for a break in period ?
Nothing but lead has gone thru up to now ...
10 rounds at fifty , now to work on the hundred and on out.
