Styrafoam containers work too! (pic heavy)

I know Ziplock bags work and I was reading those speculating Styrofoam also might work. Then someone commented "put up or shut up" - paraphrased.
    OK Challenge accepted!

My wife gets these mailing coolers for injection medications:

I have a ton of those things from past years of medicine shipments. Keep everybody supplied with 12 pac coolers!

I'll have to dig one out of storage and try it.

    Thanks!

That is cool. You got a lot more static goin' on than I have been able to generate. I got nowhere near that kinda coating from tumbling, on my boolits or on my gloves. My gloves only get a light sheen of powder when I dip my fingers into the powder that the boolits were just tumbled in, or in the bag it came from. It just doesn't stick like that. Nice procedure you got going!

They are blue lightweight disposable gloves. At first I thought they were latex, now I'm thinking they might be nitrile. These were sitting under my reloading bench on the garage floor for many years. I tried some new HF vinyl gloves and they didn't work quite as well. They were a little more glossy and tacky. Yesterday I first tried some quality nitrile gloves and they were worse. Those gloves had a slight texture to them for better grip. Well, that texture caused bare spots on the surface and didn't allow the powder to coat evenly.

This morning I found some gloves at Lowes that look very similar to the ones I've found that were the best.

I bought a pack and will try it out tonight. That first batch produced too many boolits for one bake so I threw in some 9mm that I had just cleaned to remove 45/45/10 tumble lube and baked another batch. The 9mm came out good too.

Oh well, at least I'm having fun.

I'm interested in this, but it looks like you tried only the HF red which we already know works very well in most applications. If it really does increase the static, I would think powders that don't work that well normally will work better.

I've set one aside from work and I'll see if one of my poorly coating DT powders will work better when I get a chance.

Yup, it's the gloves that make it work best!

These gloves work best for spreading the powder evenly:

Did the same thing as in the video of the OP to spread the powder around

Coated 121 9mm Lee 356-120-TC's and left some with a few little bare spots

Out of the oven, the paint flowed over the bare spots for 100% coverage:

You need to pull the glove so it fits snugly over your index finger and thumb, no wrinkles. The gloves are thin and cheap so be careful pulling so that you don't rip it.

    Walkingjay,
It's parchment paper used for baking buns & cinnamon rolls. It does not stick, does not conduct heat or electricity and is reusable over and over again. I wanted to give it a shot before buying non-stick aluminum foil because my wife already had it in the house and I saw someone else using it.

Tried a Styrofoam cooler last night. The purpose of my experiment was to see if it was any better than the #5 plastic containers. For that reason I purposely used a powder that doesn't give even dry tumble coatings.

    I found a few observations.

    1) The powder coating didn't turn out any better.
    2) The little cells come loose with bullets banging around and stick to your bullets. This is a pain.
    3) It seems to me the material itself soaks up more powder, making it noticeably less efficient. I wound up pouring a lot more in than I thought I would have needed.
    4) It did seem to generate a good amount of static, but this powder just doesn't give a good dry tumble coating.

I haven't tried the gloves thing. Maybe I ought to give it a shot sometime.

Bet 'ya used a standard WalMart beer cooler, right??????? They will not succeed.

These coolers above are a heavy TIGHT injection molded foam......no "little balls" to come off. They are used to ship temperature sensitive medications via FEDEX or UPS by pharmacies. The ones I get I can stand on them!!!!!!!

My earlier comments of it not working were based upon the standard cheeeeeepo coolers you can buy at sports stores. They are throw-away and are very loosely molded. I never thought of the heavy duty tight molded coolers like the med containers. Also the walls of these things are over 2" thick!!!

If you can find one it will be the only way you will probably have success with foam containers. Talk to some buddies that get meds thru the mail.

Or just stick to #5 plastic containers.......we know they work!

This container is a disposable cooler used to ship expensive antibodies at a laboratory. This is pretty heavy duty and tight, but obviously not so tight that cells don't shed when 200 grain bullets bounce around in there. I probably could stand on it.

They're a lot better than some things, but I personally don't like them a whole lot for the reasons stated above. If anyone else is having success, I'm glad, but I think I've satisfied my curiosity on the Styrofoam.

You don't bounce the boolits in there. I had over two hundred 175g 40 cal boolits in there and wound up with no loose Styrofoam because I did nothing but gently swirl the entire mixture in the box. If you are hearing or feeling hard knocks on the walls of the container, you are not using enough BB's and each time the boolit touches the wall of the container or another boolit, it is rubbing the powder off of the lead.

Dilly.......I think you may be using too much force as stated above. Sounds like your cooler may be one of those "medical" tough ones shipped in the mail. I have not have any chunks come off.

But reports are still coming in! Only time will tell.

#5 works very well, so we always have that to fall bak on!

    thanks for the report.

Are the plastic balls airsoft ammo? If so, I am getting more tempted to try this with items that I already have at hand. I have a 2 oz. bottle each of Red, Yellow and Black ProTec powder paint from fishing jig making days...
http://www.cabelas.com/product/Fishi...3Bcat104487480, my sons air soft BB's, and a cool whip container. Wonder if this brand of powder paint will suffice.

The sticky point will be the oven ... has anyone snuck them into the kitchen oven?
