    Deformed gas checks

I found a whole box of RCBS 22 cal. 55 gr. boolets I forgot I had they are pure lino (52gr). They fall from the mold at .2255 and I snapped on a Hornady check and through a Lee .224 push through. Hard push and the pusher deformed the check leaving an uneven shoulder around the edge. I will probably try shooting them unsized as the checks seem to snap on. Rifle is a CZ-527 hornet they are reputed to have .223 tight bores any problems as long as they will chamber.?? Frank C.

Thinking this over I probably should run them through the Lyman lube/sizer as I have a .224 die. Frank C.

I run checked boolits through a Lee base first. The die can pull checks off. Flat meplats work fine but a sharper point needs a base plug to fit the nose.
You NEED to size the check or it will open brass if larger then the boolit diameter. The Lyman works to hold them.

I needed to polish the taper of a Lee .224 die to get it to work as it did what Frank C. described. I actually opened up the die to .225 during the polishing and this is the size my AR-15 works best with. I do give the boolits a light misting spray of case lube prior to seating the GC's and sizing as this made them go through the sizer with minimal effort. For lubing the boolits are passed through a Star and Tac#1 is used.

It is easy with the Lyman to just seat the check if that is what you want to do. I have the Lyman tool for so doing but seldom use it because it is just as easy for me to do it by feel.

Belikseme300, I polished the lee .224 sizing die with 1500 grit abrasive body paper. What a difference the polish made pushes through with half the effort. I miked the boolets and I didn't remove metal just shined it up well. Thanks Frank C.
