    need opinion on Levers

I have a chance to get a Pre micro groove Marlin in 30-30. OR a Win94 AE with cross bolt safety, which would you rather have?

Same price, the marlin shows some wear and the 94 is in great shape

    Thanks

I like both but a pre MG Marlin would catch my eye. You are more likely to get an opportunity to score a good deal on a Win94 AE some time in the future than the Marlin. If it were my money, it would be the Marlin.

    43pu,

I have an excellent condition Win 94AE and three Marlin LGs and I would trade my 94ae in a heartbeat for that Marlin 30-30.

well talked to the guy and apparently "slightly used" is an overstatement the stock is broken in half!! and then nailed back together, it is a Pre Micro grove what would be a decent price?

Winchesters period will always command a higher resale value of the two. IMO: You should be on the receiving end of a some cash too boot in such a trade. For your own benefit look up the trade value of your A/E Winchester verses the trade on that old beater Marlin with its broken stock. Most good sporting good stores have that Book of Gun Values available in their book Rack or under their gun counter. I know my guidance may not coincide with some others here. But this thread isn't about my theories or guidance. Right or wrong your the one OP who's making that final decision.

it is a Pre Micro grove what would be a decent price?
    A pre-Micro model. 1936 maybe with a broken stock. >$50.00 bucks Max

If the rest of the Marlin is in good shape I'd take it over the Winchester ANY day!, I sent my 94AE down the road and replaced it with a Marlin, I'll admit I'm biased!, of two Winchesters, the 9422 will stay, the 94AE is GONE, and I have 21 Marlins in the safe.

I would not trade for the Marlin. I would just buy it but I almost never sell/trade a lever gun. With a broken stock I would expect a really good price and then I replace the stock, but that's just me. I did that with a beaten and battered 1895 in .45-70. I slimmed down the forearm and got a decent replacement butt stock.

Well I just bought it, I paid 200 OTD for it and the stock isn't that bad, I think ill keep the Win as a loner, OR for my kids when they grow up and are old enough to handle it.

    Thanks

I think you did the right thing. If you trade guns... you will never have MORE. And isn't having more guns is what's it's all about ?

The 9422 is on the same level as my 39A and 39M, the 94AE wasn't in the same class as any of the 36's, 336's, 1894's 1895's or other variant of Marlin I own?

Nicely done. I enjoy my Marlins and my Winchesters. Each have their strengths and weaknesses so must have one of each...until you can add a Savage to the family.

Go with the marlin better gun in my opinion. I have a pre micro grove it shoots great. But then again I have never had a problem with the micro groves. With properly sized bullets.

Like most everything else in the gun world it's a matter of opinion . And your opinion and mine do not agree . IMHO fine old Marlin 39A or 39M rifles are far nicer then 9422 rifles . But then I think only Pre 64 Winchesters are worth buying and as we both are well aware the 9422 was not a Pre 64 gun !

The Marlin receiver is tried, true, and been around for long time. You can take down a Marlin in 5 minutes. I have to get the book out for my Winchesters! I prefer the Marlin.
