I have used several cans of IMR 4831,love it in my 3006.

Excels in 06 sized cases...the longer the barrel the better it works. If so desired it can be used for upper end cast if your barrel length and twist will allow it and your casting/loading/alloying skills are up to the task at hand.

it's my prefered powder for 243win with Heavy for caliber J-words in my benchrest rifle (long heavy barrel).

The only thing is, it can be a pain in the powder measure.

An excellent choice for 7mm RM.

    Short answer: NOT REALLY.

They are certainly CLOSE to each other in burn rate, but in my experience, IMR4831 is sufficiently quicker than H4831 that it could easily lead to excessive pressure if switched with the H4831 in a maximum load.

It's best to treat them as two distinctly-different powders. (Both are great for many purposes.)

FWIW--mil surp 4831 works great in my Marlin 336, 30-30's and cast boolits of 180g.

I was told 4831 was way too slow for the Garand and would cause excessive gas pressure that could bend the operating rod.

Bill, IMR 4831 is a versatile powder for many handguns - rifles and shot shells.
Seeing the list is long, I'll let you do your own home work ...
    https://www.hodgdon.com/PDF/Hodgdon%...c%20Manual.pdf
Open the Basic Manual. Then on your tool bar: Edit > Find ... that opens a window. Type 4831 and click on next and keep clicking next that will find every caliber - bullet weight and 4831 loading data
The manual is 72 pages so sit back and enjoy!

A max load of 4831 might, and I wouldn't try it.

However 41 grs is no where near max load / max pressure. A max Jword load for 30-06 is closer to 60 grs compressed.

    7mm / 300 / 338 win mags work well with 4831

I was scared to use slow powders in my M1 Garand for a while and avoid them like the plague when loading for it. I have now learned that only J words and slow powder dont mix for the old war horse. But heavy Boolits, slow powders and the M1 Garand get along just fine.
Just stay in reasonable Boolit velocities and you will have 0 problems.
