    24 Grains of A2400 in 30-06 Velocity?

So I went to the range the other day and got to shoot my Savage Axis 30-06. I was pleasantly pleased with both my jacketed and cast loads but I have no idea about velocity as I don't have a chronograph,

    My cast load is:
    24.0 gr of Alliant 2400
    Lee C309-170 rnfp
Gas checked and LLA lubed they weigh in at 182gr, give or take a couple of grains.

Anyone have an idea what velocity these are doing out of a 22 inch barrel? I am loving this load, as I'm just over an inch at 100 yards. They also hit almost to the same point of aim as my 180gr jacketed loads!

    Thanks in advance,

    Emrah

Thanks for the good report, Emrah. I have the same mold, and powder. Just waiting for nicer weather to begin casting, as I do so outdoors.

That's a great combination for my Savage 110 30-06 too! 100 yards will group 1" with the steady hand of my son on the bench. I chronographed that load last summer. I'll post it as soon as I find it.

I have the Lyman manual and I was going by info for the 311041 boolit so I knew I'd be in that range. I was just curious if anyone had actually shot and chrono'd this particular setup.

Lyman #4 CBH lists the 180 gr 311332 over 21 gr 2400 at 1809 fps out of a 24" barrel. That matches my own testing with a 177 gr 311041 and 180 gr MiHec 311-180 over the same 21 gr 2400 out of my 24" test barrel. I venture your load of 22 gr 2400 is over your 182 gr cast bullet running 1775 - 1850 fps out of your 10" twist Savage with 22" barrel which is why it is accurate. An excellent load.

Thanks Larry. I agree it's an excellent load. It's about where I wanted to be for a 100 yard deer load.

Quickload says that 24.0 grns of 2400 in a 22" bbl. should give you 1966fps with that boolit in an '06. This load generates 27,778 psi, with 100% powder burnt and 41.8% case fill.
I've never upped my charge of 2400 above 18.0 grns in the '06. So obviously 2400 isn't too fast to try going to 22 or 24 grains? Hmmm, I thought those charges would be slamming the base too hard. So many thing to try, so little time!

I shoot so that I can handload.

Using the 311467 mold and slower powder, you should be able to get at least 2350 fps (with accuracy) out of a 10 twist barrel. At least, that's what i've heard.

In my 1917 Enfield 22g of 2400 gets 1900fps out of the long barrel with the RCBS 180sp.

Yes, Frank is correct, we do hear that all the time. However in this case 2400 is a pretty fast burning powder for that level of velocity. If attempting such HV with cast in a 22" barrel with a 10" twist a slower burning powder (much slower actually) would be a better choice.

2400 is a great cast bullet powder but I don't like it for loads over 1800 fps or so. Want to go faster then find a better powder.
You will learn far more at the casting, loading, and shooting bench than you ever will at a computer bench.
