    30-40 trapdoor

somebody mentioned at one time here in a thread talking about the chambering's to put on a trapdoor platform when doing a custom barrel/chamber job on a trapdoor. I cant find that thread and would like to research the change the gubbermint did when doing a tryout for the 30-40 round.

can someone chime in with this info or the poster ...[srry cant remember the poster either]... re-post the info mentioned and maybe the reference to these tests?

    thanks all

Here's some interesting reading, though maybe not exactly what you're after.

13 Echo ... yes that is close very interesting on the main subject.

Tatume ... no ... what im looking for is a post that refers to an actual Trapdoor rebarreled to the 30-40. it would be an interesting transformation I think.

Not sure how true this is but dimly remember the Springfield Arsenal trying to make up trapdoors in 30-40 but the 40k pressures were too much for the trapdoor action. Then again I could be wrong. Frank

Several springfield single shot rifles were used to test barrel alloys for the 30-40 cartridge. They were rebarrelled many time each, to test the barrels. The actions held up to the cartridge.

I am not aware of a thread on this site specific to the OP's question.

I read an article about one that was converted to 38WCF. Didn't print it out, and now cant find it.

that would be an interesting conversion as well ... 38 WCF ... I have heard of 38-55's also ... sky would be the limit if a feller kept the chamber to be equal or lower pressure then the 30-40 I would guess.

Any cartridge based on the 45-70 basic case would also work well, 45-80, 38-56. 40-65, 33 WCF. Drop down to the 30-30 basic and you can include the 38-55, 32-40, 30 WCF, 25-35. Drop to the WCF cartridges, 44 WCF (44-40), 38 WCF (38-40), even the 45 long Colt. Once you get to the pistol cartridges, you are carrying a heavy rifle for a small cartridge, I have heard of a 22 Hornet in a Trapdoor, basically it was a target weight barrel fr the cartridge. I am aware of a current build that is in 22 LR. How small do you want to go?

I can't find it now, but there was a museum in TX, perhaps one of the Army bases, had a trapdoor that was barreled for 30/40. I think I'd prefer a rolling block.

at least with a trapdoor [my opinion anyway] the block and shell would be deflected up a bit instead of straight back like with the roller. the 30-30 base cartridges sound fun with either the 32-40 or 38-55 being of the heap like for me ... however a 25-35 would be nice as well but ... then we are getting a lot o steel with its weight as is mentioned above ... 22 LR ... woww !!
