Best Cast Bullet for 8x 57 Mauser

    Hu Gents,

what do you think is the best Cast Bullet Mould for the 8 x 57 ?

    Saeco 081
    Lyman 323470
    Lee 324- 175 R1
    RCBS Mold 08-170-FN

especially suitable for the Gewehr 1888
I use the Lee at present time ans size down to .321 but was looking for another Mould with just a bit more and/or deeper Greasegroves
finaly even a touch more accurate than the Lee

The 323470 is excellent in every M98 8x57 I've used it in over the years. I just size at .325. The even better mould is the 323471 if you can find one.

I agree with Larry the 323470 shoots great in my 98. I also have the lee 175 and lee karbiner that casts 235grs,they all shoot well.the karbiner is my favorite.

That 235 Lee and the 250 Lee came about as group buys and both work good. They were both dimensioned with milsurp rifles in mind.
I have both ( if anyone needs to try) and I really like the 250gn. It brings the 8x57 milsurp rifles closer the 35 Whelen performance.

My 1888 uses a Hoch 185 grain flat nose mold made to match the 12" twist barrel. Gonna try the Lyman 316275 round nosed plain base paper patched. The length should be ok with the twist.

    Hi Gents

thx a lot for your comments and advises

do i have an advantage for accuracy and prevent leading if i use a loverin design over any others designs by smokless loads ?
at my favorite BPCR Shooting a Bullet with deep wide groves wich carry a lot of Lube works well to avoid black fouling and leading
I know that other facts occur between black and smokeless loads but the loverin design Bullets with ist groves drives me to ask for this matter.

    what do you think ?

    Hey Klaus.
The Loverin style designs can be very forgiving. Bore riding type designs with multiple narrow lube grooves on the larger barrel groove diameter portion of the bullet can also be very forgiving.

Can you tell that I also like the 471' ??
I sold my 470', it wouldn't even come close to shooting with the 471' ! !

    Ben,

Now I gone and bought that `470 off you and it casts wonderfully. I'm expecting it to be a great mold for my 1888/05 Commission Rifle and my 3 other 8mm caliber rifles (32WS, 8x57 and 8mm-06) as well.

    Bruce :

I have bought 25 molds in past years from people who swore they wouldn't shoot in their rifles ( they most likely didn't shoot well in THEIR rifles ), but they shot wonderfully in MY RIFLES.

Remember, each rifle is " Unto Itself ".

The 470' shot well in my many 8 mm rifles, but it never shot as well as the 471'.

    George,

I'd be tempted to order this one from Al if he had it in stock ( not to be right now ? ? )

this one with a HP makes a DANDY round, and if not a HP make it a flat point just as good.

I really like the loverin style.

noe has the tooling to make it, just not in inventory.

"do i have an advantage for accuracy and prevent leading if i use a loverin design over any others designs by smokless loads ?"

Most definitely. The two Loverin designs are the most accurate 8x57 cast bullets I've found for milsurp rifles. For HV loads (1900 - 2300+ fps) I put lube in all the lube grooves except the driving band. I use an NRA 50/50 lube or Lar's 2500+. With milder loads in the 1600 - 1850 fps range I only put lube in the grooves that will be inside the case neck. I most often find .325 to be an excellent sizing for most milsurp 8x57s. You might want to do a chamber cast of, or slug, the throat for correct sizing. The bullets should just be a slip fit into the throat with not more than .001 less in diameter. I find COWWs +2% tin and Lyman's #2 alloy to be very good. I AC the bullets for loads up through 1900 fps and WQ then for HV loads.

The Loverin style bullets will fit your 1888 Commission 8x57 perfectly. They, like most milsurp 8x57s, have a very long throat. Both the '470 & '471 can be seated with the GC at the bottom of the neck. The multi groove long bearing surface of the Loverin style will then fit perfectly up into that long throat providing maximum alignment and support for the cast bullet in transition from case to throat to bore during acceleration. I've used numerous other designs of cast bullets in many different 8x57s. While a couple will shoot as good as the Loverins in the 1600 - 1900 fps range none of the others shoot as good above that velocity range. Actually most other designs are hard pressed to shoot as good as the Loverins.

I wish NOE would make the 323471 w/o the scraper groove. Maybe I should talk to Swede..........?

Dang Ben, I was going to sell my 323471 that I have never cast a boolit from, but after the picture of that group, maybe I need to reconsider.
