    Thoughts on the HG #51

First, general thoughts on the design? As with the Keiths, my interest in Mr. Sharps' bullet is part practical, part historical.

Second, is anyone, other than the troubled Ballisti-cast, making a clone? Tom doesn't appear to have it on roster (yet), and I haven't been following Swede long enough to see if it's one he keeps in the rotation.

No sense stirring the pot for a group buy if it's available or pops up regularly.

Crickets chirping. It would seem that nobody likes Phil Sharpe...

Tom will make you one. You may have to send him a sample. I am surprised no one has done one.

I'm getting kind of puzzled here myself - virtually zero response on what is essentially the ORIGINAL .357 Magnum bullet design. Not that there's any shortage of SWC's in that general range, but I figured there would be some folks lurking here with a "living history" side to their casting hobby.

Not quite sure I understand your posts, but #51 is about the only bullet I use in the .38 Special and .357 Magnum. I know little about the technical aspects of bullet design, so I won't comment on that. Nevertheless, my #51 mould makes an accurate bullet. The only other SWC designs I've tried have been the H&G #12B, Lyman #358429 (and the HP version), and Lyman #358156. Of course, all these can be used in the development of accurate loads, but #51 remains my favorite.

Simply looking for feedback on its use (Thanks, BTW); to see if the design is already "on file" with one of our manufacturers if I decide I need one; and if any GB's have been done on it in the past.

Bigslug- I haven't bought any custom moulds lately, but with all the mould makers we have today, I would be surprised if at least one of them doesn't have #51 in their inventory. I have no idea how difficult it would be to find a used #51, but there's bound to have been a bunch of them produced. Good luck-

Ahhhh. . .but where oh where will I get this bullet to send to Tom at Accurate Molds?

As if I have any business branching out beyond my 358429's at this point in time. . .

If you watch here or ebay I bet you can get an original 4 cavity with handles in good shape. In the past 2 years I have have gotten a couple even one bevel base.

If you want an old school 38 cal bullet that is outstanding, the H&G #51 is it. Ballisti-Cast purchased the designs some time ago. Here at the shop we do utilize Ballistic-Cast molds in our commercial casting machines, thus we are part of the few that offer this true replica of the Hensley & Gibbs #51 bevel base. Our alloy makes it a tad lighter (158gr). Customer response on this bullet has been great. Great history behind this mold. If you can find an H&G #51 mold that is great shape at a good price, buy it and try it.

Funny how one's old posts tend to resurface. My own interests have been moving more toward LFN and WFN profiles with tumble lube grooves, but I was able to network with another member to get samples from an original mold to Al at NOE:

Looks we've collectively managed to keep it alive. YAY US!

I would be interested in a group buy. As stated NOE makes a H&G 51 mold.

There was one left on NOE's site that has been there for months it seems and I finally bit tonight. Looking forward to getting it and trying it out in 38 Special.

An active inventory re-run at NOE for the 360-158-SWC (H&G 51) has been going on.
Looks like there is a discount if you're a confirmed pre-run sign on - vs' waiting for it to show up in as "in stock" in the shop.
