    which mold for 45-70?

I have a handi rifle in 45-70, that will be mostly useless next year. MS is doing away with the muzzle loading season (from what I hear) and allowing use of regular season rifles. We should have seen this coming since we started using 45-70 one year then 444 added the next then of all things 35 wheelen. The 35 is a monster, anyway I don't want to get rid of the HR and thought I would start casting for it and maybe take it hog hunting. I read that the very heavy boolits can come close to african type rifles, but I also like to have something that will shoot a good distance. I guess I need something for hogs that would do a good job for an after the shtf gun also. The hr is nice light and short, so longer range is kind of a moot point, that said which boolit mold would be the most fun?

If your looking to shoot distance you will want to shoot the lighter boolits for your 45-70. 292gr to 330gr is just fine for deer and hogs.

There was a group buy some time ago for a 460420 mold. It's a great boolit. Wide meplat, 415 gr as I cast it and with 40 gr of 3031 or 30 gr of 4198 & a pinch of Dacron, it's a wonder. Frequently one hole groups from my and others H&R's. Best I've had out of a .45-70.

RCBS 405 GC is a really fine mold, great design, very accurate in my GG.

If it was easy, anybody could do it.

    "Mostly useless" LOL

For fun why not the big Lee 500 grainer? It should shoot through anything.

    More lead, more recoil.

Look at the NOE 405 plain base. Good bullet.
You will learn far more at the casting, loading, and shooting bench than you ever will at a computer bench.

Fixed it for you. It's a tack driver that doesn't seem to care what it drives tacks out of. I don't think you can make it NOT shoot.
    WWJMBD?

In the Land of Oz, we cast with wheel weight and 2% Tin, Man.
