H-4895, or maybe Ramshot TAC ??

I have found Ramshot TAC works great in my .223 & 308 loads, where I have used H-4895 in the past. H-4895 has become almost impossible to find. Yet Ramshot TAC seems to be readily available. Then ran across this burn rate chart. Your thoughts....

The Hodgdon chart puts TAC just faster than either 4895 and several items slower than H335.

A chart from Western Powder puts TAC just faster than either 4895 and the same as H335.

I also have a Lovex chart that puts TAC between H 4895 and IMR 4895.


For 223 or 308, I would put TAC and H335 as top choices for typical bullets and good cost/availability

AA 2200 and 2230 are also worth looking at.

BL-C2 would be under consideration with heavier bullets.

I use it in everything from 223 to 8x57 and 30-06 for fmj plinking loads. The various loading manuals data shows TAC is a hair faster than H4895, about 1/2 grain at start loads for 308. Closer to N135. The Burn Rate Charts are all over the place, and the best way to see what is what is look at actual loading manuals from the manufacturers.

I picked up some TAC but find loading data a challenge. I thought it would be good for .308 service rifle loads, but Hodgdon does not recommend it as a service rifle powder on their site. They also don't recommend it for any of the military Mauser cartridges, either, although they do suggest some of the other Ramshot powders for those. Not sure if that is intentional or if they just haven't bothered to do the work.

Be assured.. It works perfectly in my 308. This is Ramshot 308 loading info from long before Hodgon bought them out.

I use it only in my 350 Rem mag. I was using H4895 with a case full to the point of the bullet being pushed back out of the case. That was a book load. I then tried TAC which gave better velocities without heavily compressing the powder. 60 grs of TAC with a 225gr Sierra game king for 2800fps and no pressure signs.I think TAC must be about the perfect powder for the 350 Rem.

I tried the Tac out in the 35 Rem. it did well.
Haven't tried it in anything else yet.
