    Patching question

Hello All: Just started reading up on paper patching and found this site to be great. I do have a question though. I'm paper patching 45-70 bullets produced by a T.Ballard mold. After the bullet is patched and dried, it seems most recommend it to be lubricated. On checking some original bullets, the paper doesn't seem to be discolored by any sort of lubricant. In days gone by, was lubrication not used, or was it applied so as to be not visible above the case? Suggestions as to best lube? Thanks, Dan

No need to lube a patched bullet. Just load into the case and shoot.

Remington did say in their reloading instructions that after the patched bullet was seated to put a drop of Spermacetti on your finger and wipe it on the patch, then wipe the excess off with a cloth.
Being that spermaceti is no longer available to us the closest thing we have is jojoba oil. Treating the patch that way does in some examples help the overall load, and in other examples it might actually cause more trouble than it's worth.
So give lubing the patch a try, but just don't use anything that will soften or contaminate the patch, unless you enjoy the sounds of flying junebug leaving your barrel and target misses, coupled with refinement of lead mining technigues.

Another thing is to watch for is that the lube dosnt act like a glue inhibiting the patch shedding at the muzzle.

I've tried lubing, and decided it wasn't worth the time.

Maynard also suggested lubing the patch in their catalog.

something that is a bit more important then patch lube would be fouling control. from experience ... i can tell you this ... if you dont develop a great way to handle the fouling shot to shot ... then all is lost.

    some use lube cookies
some wipe the bore to a pristine clean
some blow tube the bore with different number of breaths
some do a combination of these

the way you handle the fouling with black powder is the key to how much success you enjoy with shooting it ... specially with patched boolits.

I'm guessing the OP either forgot he had this thread, or like the other day,, he got more expert advice thru private messages than he knew what to do with..

We all may have been helped to some degree if the one advising via PM (if that happened) had shared his knowledge here.

Howdy, lurked for a while but decided it's time to post. I've had really good results with lubed and paper patch boolits when backing up with pre-lubed wonder wads. Keeps fouling soft and they are easy to use. I used to use grease cookies prior to the Wonder Wads.
