The worry over Doe Run is pointless. There are plenty of secondary smelters that deal in recycled lead but the real issue is prohibition, not short supply. The lead poisoning of waterfowl was a real issue, not something drummed up by the controllers. I grew up on the Chesapeake and I've seen it first hand.
Hunting or shooting on public lands. On private lands, pretty sure you can still do as you please.
The Condor thing is a ruse for gun control, nothing else. Do Condors die of led poisoning, yes, but it's more likely enviro, air/water, than they actually ingest bullets or fragments. I have killed many large & small game animals, almost never find a bullet because it exited, so nothing for the bird to eat.
Yes Kalif sucks, has for the last 30yrs or so. Anyone staying here is doing so at their own peril. We pay a hell of a price for nice weather, IMO, just not worth it anymore after living here on & off for 52yrs. Give me some snow days over a stupid & oppressive govt any day.

Wish they would focus more on banning illegal aliens than on banning lead boolits.

Fred the game belongs to the state (the people) they catch you hunting with lead on public or private property the fine will be the same and large. On this same topic 3 or 4 years ago a vetinarian posted that animals shot with lead boolits would have trace amounts of lead left in their bodies even if the projectile passed through. Condors are not lead tolerant and trace amounts will get them sick, may even kill them. I just won't believe this state is serious about saving condors until they leave beached whales on the shore for the condors to eat. To date when it has been a contest between Barbara Strizand and condors, Barbara has won. As long as condors don't eat my paper targets I can continue to shoot lead.
I find some of this discussion about California is a bit alarming. I see it a different way completely. Don't like how something is going? CHANGE IT. Writing CA off is *conceding a winnable battle* that could tip the tide of a political war on the second amendment. California residents (especially the kind that post on a forum like this) need *support* of our countrymen, not their scorn.
They should pass a law that condors can only dine on kalifornia politicians, problem solved.
If you think your a hammer everything looks like a nail.
totalloser, hate to wander from the focus on lead boolits for hunting but... Unless all the illegal aliens are rounded up and sent packing back to their Country of origin, and every worthless traitor that supports the presence of said criminal aliens is somehow shown the error of their ways, California is finished. It is unsaveable.
By the way, those criminal aliens produce litters of future Dem/Lib voters who elect Dem/Lib 2nd amendment destroyers and anti-lead boolit legislators.

Last I heard, Doe Run is still mining a lot of lead in the form of the mineral Galena here in Missouri. It was their smelter in Herculaneum that shut down. Galena is often nicknamed lead by the miners and locals. However, it is lead sulfide and must be smelted to obtain the lead. What is really neat to see is how the Galena is separated from the ground up rock. It actually is treated chemically so that it attaches to a soap bubble and floats in the processing liquid, while the much lighter waste rock sinks to the bottom of the vat.
It isn't just California that seems to be going nuts. I think it must be something in large bodies of water because both coasts are infected as well as several localities on the Great Lakes. For the most part it seems not to be prevalent in the Gulf of Mexico.
"Time wounds all heels." Well, maybe not, but it helps me to think so rather than responding to bad actors.
Whiterabbit, actually Kentucky not only had a higher number of NICS background checks than any other State, they also had the highest number of NICS background checks per capita. If you count gun purchases relative to State population, California is number 42 on guns purchased per person at 26.29 purchases per 1,000 people. Kentucky takes top honors, number 1 at 535.78 guns purchased per 1,000 people.
You may be right about NRA membership numbers. However, what little info I've seen suggests that Texas has the most NRA members.
I really do hope I'm wrong about California being lost to the anti-Constitution liberal progressives, but as long as Constitution loving conservatives are vastly outnumbered by Dem/lib voters, the State legislature will continue their incremental usurpation of citizen rights and liberties.

Hi Wolf,
We've talked about those numbers at length on California forums. KY is cherrypicked data, because KY requires a background check EVERY MONTH for every CCW holder. That greatly magnifies the NICS checks. Second, there is no data on the number of guns purchased per check. In CA, we have a 10 day wait period on all firearms purchases. That may incentivize multiple firearms per NICS check.
You may not be aware, but we recently won a 9th circuit case involving concealed carry which will, for all intents and purposes, (though I'm not 100% sure if the semantics are accurate) will turn CA into a shall issue state. If you assume our legislature enacts a silly law demanding a monthly background check for a CCW holder (and given precedent in KY, it's not unreasonable to assume we'll have it in our laws soon enough) then you'll see our own NICS data spike up to your level. Pretty quickly, actually.
I corrected the reality of your statement. What we need is as many real conservatives moving TO California to swing the numbers.
By the way, don't think you can give up on California and assume it's not going to bite YOU on the ****. Without conservatives putting the state in check, we will enact all sorts of insane laws that will directly affect YOU as well. Case in point, this chicken egg law that states that all eggs sold in California shall meet OUR standard of humane living (and guess how reasonable that standard is). And we are getting (rightly) sued over such standards.
So don't think you can just export all our conservatives and allow CA to crumble under the weight of its own utopianism. If YOU don't do YOUR part to stop CA lunacy, it's gonna come knocking on your doorstep too. Just ask Colorado. Unless they are hopeless too.
October 29, 2013 - The Doe Run plant in Herculaneum, Missouri is the last primary lead smelter in the country. The facility uses raw ore mined from local deposits.
By the end of this year the last primary lead smelter in the United States will be closing. According to a press release by the National Rifle Association’s Institute for Legislative Action (NRA-ILA), the Doe Run facility in Herculaneum, Missouri plans on closing its doors in December. The smelter has existed in the same location for the past 121 years and is currently the only facility of its kind that can produce lead bullion from raw ore. Other smaller, secondary smelters only have the capability of retrieving lead from used items such as ammunition or batteries.
For the last 25 years Doe Run had been grappling with environmentalists and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) over strict new air standards. According to KBIA Radio, the news of the smelter’s closure received a mixed reception among Herculaneum residents. For the hundreds of employees that are facing unemployment and the many more that depend on the smelter, Doe Run’s closure is an end of an era. To the others that have long called for the facility’s closure, it could not have come soon enough. For years, some residents have claimed a fine dust permeated the town as a result of the smelter’s operation.
“This was all over,” said resident Jack Warden. “It covered the side-walking areas. Kids would ride their bicycle down the street and they’d see that dust, they’d lock the brakes up, slide the back tire around on the bicycle, dust would just go flying. And that’s what they were breathing—30 percent lead.”
The Missouri Department of Natural Resources took notice and issued a cease and desist order. After criticism from federal health officials and other agencies, Doe Run cleaned up the facility and took measures to lower their production. In 2002, the smelter finally met the Clean Air Act lead standard, but it was not long before the EPA added further restrictions. In 2010, Doe Run announced that it will not be modifying the plant to suit the new restrictions and instead would be shutting down.
According to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, Doe Run initially toyed with the idea of constructing a $100 million clean lead production facility in Herculaneum but later decided against it.
On a national scale, the NRA-ILA states that the plant’s closure could affect ammunition makers.
“What is clear is that after the Herculaneum smelter closes its doors in December, entirely domestic manufacture of conventional ammunition, from raw ore to finished cartridge, will be impossible,” the organization said in its press release.
It is not currently known how far-ranging the impacts of Doe Run’s closure will be.
The smelter’s closure will leave nearly 145 employees and 73 contractors out of jobs, although some personnel will be retained for closing operations. The plant’s closure will be especially hard on the local school system, which receives $500,000 a year from Doe Run.
“We have a very talented workforce and encourage businesses looking for dedicated, hardworking and skilled employees to contact us,” said Doe Run manager Gary Hughes.

It's not about gun control, it's about people control. The progressives are using terrorists and the insane to further their agenda. If the socialist news media wasn't complicit, we could sit back and watch Fast & Furious and Benghazi-gate unfold.
BTW, California may be a gun ownership repressive state but I submit that Illinois is worse. I'm not aware of a FOID card issued by the "California State Police".

P.S. Oh yeah, I just remembered that MI and NJ residents need a permit to purchase a big-bore airgun! Point is... if we all just cherry pick the best places to live based on gun laws, one might find themselves moving around a bit during their lifetime. The honorable thing to do is stay put and fight for your rights. Personally, I don't like CA because it's too crowded and expensive; however, I know lots of good people who live there... and they're all fluent in my language... so to speak.
